For at least a year, I've been returning to the question, how would you know when it's time to leave the US? For this piece, I asked trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer Americans who, with their families and partners, have recently fled the country, about how they made this decision and how they left.
When Is It Time to Flee?
Trans people and their families are facing hard questions and choices as threats to their safety and rights proliferate.

She's a nurse & grandmother who had been here for 30 years

She had a work permit

She was taken when she went to her annual ICE check-in

She was shipped to Ghana, where she was dragged on the floor.

She was then shipped to Sierra Leone, from which she had fled, and *despite a court order.*
Ms. Kuyateh was one of 19 third-country nationals sent to Ghana on Nov. 6. At least 61 TCNs have been removed there since September.

Others report similar treatment. Nigerians were forced to cross into Togo w/o documents, rendering them essentially stateless

Rabbiatu Kuyateh was detained this summer at her annual ICE check-in, her son said. She moved to the D.C. area 30 years ago as she fled civil war in Sierra Leone.

"The weddings that young people once dreamed of now exist only in imagination. ... Many families, especially during these two years of destruction, have chosen not to hold any celebrations at all—out of respect for those they lost or simply because there is no safe place to gather anymore."
Weddings in Gaza used to be a time for celebration. But now, weddings that people once dreamed of only exist in their imaginations, writes Hassan Herzallah. After all the loss, the waiting, & the silence of two years, Gazans are trying to rebuild not just their homes, but the meaning of life itself.

In October, statewide news reported that a sheriff's deputy in Texas searched thousands of Flock cameras in Washington for 'Had an abortion, search for female.’ New documents obtained by RANGE show Spokane County Sheriff's Office cameras were accessed in that search:
