Democracy, books, pie, pockets, and both run-on and incomplete sentences. Also coffee in giant cups with saucers; cream, three sugars.

(Not friendly to Trump voters. We cannot "all just get along", no.)

In all seriousness, Vance’s unhinged diatribe really reminds me that this country is in dire straits. I can’t even wrap my mind around how bad things are and how impossible everything feels. How are we supposed to stay here and write and stay like… alive?

I don't think the failure to release the files is primarily about Trump's appearance there.

Like Epstein's point in keeping the files in the first place, knowing those names is POWER.

See also: SCOTUS wins, media capitulations, law firms showing their bellies. I think these things are related.
New in PN: Why Epstein has Trump crashing out

"At this point, Trump might as well release all the files. They can’t do any more damage than he does himself whenever he opens his mouth on the subject."
Why Epstein has Trump crashing out
The hole gets deeper every time he opens his mouth.

5/ NPR should put together a feed of stories that are about rural America from across all of its offerings, that stations could run.

For example, I just listened to a Living on Earth segment on how flooding is overwhelming rural septic systems. Very timely coverage for rural communities

Catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country has killed 79 people. Rescue crews are searching for missing girls from Camp Mystic. Here is a guide on how to help those affected.

People living under fascism didn’t survive by giving up joy—they protected it.

They held onto the things fascism tried to erase: art, friendship, jokes, rituals, language, memory.

Not as escapism but as resistance. As proof they were still human.

Joy isn’t frivolous under fascism. It’s strategic.

I. Keep. Beating. This. Horse.
Can you suggest *specifically* what else they could have done to stop the horse bolting completely? There are no magic spells around our democracy as currently constituted. *Specifically*.

Thinking right now about that period 14 months ago when lefties were portraying Joe Biden as something akin to a fascist dictator. I took a lot of heat for saying people were being ridiculous and that those attacks on Biden would age extremely poorly if Trump won. And now here we are.

This is *such* a great story.

Especially when the developer behind this US Attorney’s phantom apartment tries to bully the Times Union reporter:

“I know many many people at Fox. Such action would induce me to pen an op-ed in the NY Post”

And? "The workers". The other class of people Trump recognizes. 1.) Extremely rich people 2.) "The workers".
This is so predictable, the only surprise is that he hadn’t already tried to kill Juneteenth sooner as a DEI holiday. He probably forgot it existed.

In the Handbook for Grooms: How To Marry Well, this picture accompanies the "Lessons Regarding Edibles" in chapter 3 as but one example of why it would not, no, be "just so funny" if you smeared your bride's face with the wedding cake without her consent.

Honestly, folks.

As a historian, every day I wonder what new assault on the democratic process awaits us from the executive branch.

The revolutionary generation knew that they were living in world-changing times.

So are we.

We need to live up to this challenge.
