Only a good guy without a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun
Wikipedia Volunteers Avert Tragedy by Taking Down Gunman at Conference

By Andy Newman

At Civic Hall in Union Square, a man with a gun walked onto the stage at a Wikipedia conference.

Richard Knipel, CUNY's Wikimedian-in-Residence, jumped the gunman and, with others' help, saved the day. Gift link

-that's weirdly fatalistic?
"It's broken"
No, the bike chain just slipped off.
"It's broken"
No, the buckle just came off because it wasn't on right.
"It's broken."
No, the battery is just empty, these are all simple fixes!!!
It does so much to instill respect for what it takes to make the objects around you, and not taking things for granted, which is something I've been having a hard time getting the neighbor kids to understand... There's so many toys that they just assume will get dealt with out of sight in a way-
Literally yesterday showed a 6yr old how to open up and diagnose the broken part in his rc car controller and he went from "it's just trash now" to being totally obsessed with how it worked (luckily it was such a simple circuitboard that I could explain the components to him) in under a minute.
Example:
1. How much labor would you trade for a burger?
2. How many coins and bills would you trade for a burger?
3. How much of your number would you trade for a burger?
4. How much of the bank's number that you are borrowing and will give back at a later time would you trade for a burger?
It goes into my attitude on value in general; in that the more abstractions away you go from "labor exchanged for commodity", the less visible that exchange rate becomes, and the more opportunities for exploitation and swindlery pop up.
I put coffee in the microwave and there was a hidden popcorn kernel in there somewhere and it popped and landed in the coffee.

Not accepting cash or checks is an extremely dangerous trend that no one seems to be all that concerned about.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
I was actually speaking to a professor yesterday (I babysit for her) who had just come from a meeting about this: Huge dip in foreign students, plus the "having less kids" trend starting to affect the traditional college-age population, in addition to points below means they are in DEEP trouble.
In 3 years there won’t a university. There isn’t now. Most voices on Palestine have been purged. LGBTQ (esp T), Black, CRT studies, purged. Labor adjunctified then cut. Death inducing student debt. Research curtailed & no freedom of speech. It is a festering pile of burning shit now…in 3 yrs?!
In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.
I have discovered way too late in life that I pull off goth jewelry pretty good. I've always been drawn to warm tones and especially copper, so I never really dabbled. 😅

wikipedia's data shows that AI is siphoning traffic away from the site, which is a danger to its sustainability. ironically Wikipedia is more important than ever to users who want reliable information instead of slop, and to AI companies that need it for training data www.404media.co/wikipedia-sa...
Wikipedia Says AI Is Causing a Dangerous Decline in Human Visitors
“With fewer visits to Wikipedia, fewer volunteers may grow and enrich the content, and fewer individual donors may support this work.”

Also I don't wanna dig at overworked pharmacists, but the ones at my new one (since RA closed) could have saved me a lot of time if they'd told me that it was a national backorder issue like, on Monday. 🙃
Got hit with the Adderall shortage again 🤪

They have successfully parried every single moral and legal outrage over their behavior by saying “that’s not happening, I didn’t know about it, and I don’t care.”

It’s not gonna happen. Nixon had 40x the integrity of these people.
I'd be bankrupt if I did it for everyone on my list, but Mitch has been on there the longest and has arguably done the worst damage. It's been on the shelf for waayyyy too long. Cheers!
-he could before but wow).

Anyways, dusting off my fancy whiskey that has his name on it.
My personal satisfaction at seeing him suffer aside; the way he has his knees entirely locked with every step suggests he has pretty extreme muscle atrophy. If you're too prideful to admit you need a wheelchair, and especially this far along, then you can't be trusted to disclose anything (not that-
Hell has a better grip every day...
