I’ve been really enjoying the #ArtAdventCalendar on here and I wanna share the art pieces that have really spoken to me this year and that have made my home and work space brighter, so here’s my #12DaysofArtmas 🧵:)

Got a lovely note yesterday from a photographer. It was lovely, but it was sad. We used a photo of his for our social media -- picked it up on Unsplash. And then I sent him a tip of $20, which is about what I'd pay for a one-off on iStock. He sent me a note via our contact form on the website 1/9

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."
Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

This is what they've done.
The EPA is starting to allow the use of pesticides containing PFAS on food. The move is part of an effort to roll back the regulation of PFAS — also known as "forever chemicals" because they don't break down easily in the environment.

It’s so annoying how people in power only reach across aisles if there’s power on the other side. Ask them to reach out to poor people, brown people, queer people, or disabled people, and it’s crickets.

The subtext in JD Vance asking for "patience" on the economy: When leaders stop talking about current conditions and jump straight to rosy forecasts, they’re signaling the present isn’t defensible. That’s your cue to scrutinize the numbers, not just the narrative.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Bluesky needs an account claiming to be a sapient tree, exclusively quote-posting people's photos.

If a photo contained trees, it would say, "Wood."

Otherwise, it would say, "Woodn't."

Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.
