This!! Look, Trump is gross. He’s crass. He’s unhinged. But…he’s a symptom. Firstly, a 2 party system isn’t really democratic. It is fine during stability but it’s inherently risky in unstable times of collapsing into authoritarianism. And secondly the checks and balances are not good enough.
Congress finds itself powerless to take its war powers back. This moment has been decades in the making. on.wsj.com/4pUnK7G

Hey. I get it if you're trying to de-Amazon. I stopped shopping there a few years ago. They're big evil.

But you know who's not big evil? Your favorite writers who're struggling cos people aren't buying their books anymore.

It's OK to use Kindle to support your faves. I'm giving you permission.

What worries me is we’re stuck in this cycle of escalating crises up to the brink and then at the last second managing to avoid the worst possible scenario. But that’s a dangerous game and I can’t see how, eventually, one of these things doesn’t actually fully spiral out of control.

the thing about the NATO deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan many Americans don't get is that the low numbers (relative to the US) are deceptive. These are countries with much smaller populations, and much smaller military forces

I met so many heroic observers on the ground today, folks I’m starting to see every day. I still don’t know real names, but there are certain pseudonyms who are always out there and that make me feel safe. I’m meeting neighbors when we discover we’re rapid response together. Community is how we win.

these temperatures are actually normal for this time of year. people here are used to it. it's not strange for someone to go outside in a t-shirt when it's thirty below to check the mail. so I could do with less of your judgement and with more of your help getting my penis unfrozen from the sidewalk

Dear President Trump. This is Britain mourning its fallen troops returning home from Afghanistan, where we lost as many troops per capita as the U.S. You disgusting draft dodging, bully.

Today is, among other things, a reminder that you don't get a general strike by posting that we should have a general strike.

You get a general strike—on the rare occasions you do—by the long slow slog of building organizing power with those around you in response to local conditions.

Imagine if the Massachusetts state government actually used the powers it has to make actual laws to respond to that!
Healey: Whether it’s ballrooms, or masked agents, or attacks on Europe and Greenland…This is not normal. It’s not normal to have somebody who acts like a two-year-old throwing a tantrum. On any given day, we don’t know what he’s going to do.

This shouldn’t be normalized. It’s not right.

New in PN: What if we just stopped paying taxes?

"Like many other blue states, Minnesota pays more to the federal government than it takes in. But why should the state continue to subsidize a government bent on destroying it? What if it just … didn’t?"
What if we just stopped paying taxes?

Let’s be clear: ICE is now one of the wealthiest law enforcement agencies in this country, and they continue to prove they are ineffective and unqualified.
