Is there yet such a thing as a, "the beatings will continue until morale improves," seat?

If not, I nominate this seat for RI.
On paper this is a flippable seat for the RI GOP.

It *may* have flipped back red in 2024 if anyone but Price ran. Trump x3 district.

But can’t discount Rep. @cotterforri.bsky.social
appeal to those voters either.

Top 3 GA seats to watch in November.
Hopkinton Town Councilor Jasmin Roy (R) is running for RI House District 39.

Seat is currently held by two-term state Rep. @cotterforri.bsky.social (D).

Cotter first won against fmr. Rep. Justin Price, who was in Washington DC during 1/6. (Price says he never entered the Capitol).

You can argue that voters don't respond to policy and generally respond to political perception, primarily driven by salesmanship... and perceptions of the macro status quo.
You cannot argue both that voters DON't respond to moving left/right on policy but that they DO respond to "moderating" on policy. Mutually exclusive.

The point is "moderate" is not an ideological label, it's being lazily applied to what used to get called "candidate quality"/"lgsltr fit"

So the state's proposing to put up the $18 million for Chartercare by withdrawing it from the extra rainy day account, making it a retroactive transfer as part of the FY 2026 budget?

Makes sense, but damn.

I keep seeing complaints like these and I'm so confused... Is the in-migration to this state from people from other climates?

Not a new phenomena, why do people seem confused about how winter works in New England?
So where are folks in Providence putting their trash and recycle bins?

[a] On top of snow piles
[b] In the street (making already-narrow streets more difficult to navigate)
[c] blocking driveways, to a lesser/greater extent
[d] other (please explain)

North Providence Police released the report when it discovered that Mr. Pass was Black, but not going to jail.

When the justice system used the tools at its discretion, the department decided that it preferred the court of public opinion.

Observation bias maybe, but my street is reasonably good, considering 17 inches, despite the vendor's plow breaking during the storm, according to the city DPW plow that came through to widen on Monday.

Also, had no trouble getting cans out & they were picked up.
He had three years of easy snowfall and fumbled it at the moment when it really mattered.

My neighbor and I watched dumbfounded yesterday as the trash pickup still happened despite no one being able to get their trash out to the street (keep in mind, they missed my side of the road the week prior).
Mayor Smiley promised us the “best run city in America,” and we are curious when exactly we’ll make progress toward that goal.

Here’s what he said when announcing his run for mayor in 2022, from a ProJo article by Amy Russo. ⤵️

There should be enforcement, through fines, for all property owners.

Those revenues should directly support service teams to clear property for the elderly & disabled.

I did two corner lots, another long AF driveway, & helped de-plow a previously cleared driveway.

I'm from here; it's how we do.
Can confirm this. And, of course, sidewalks too.
Providence roads are in rough shape. Big storm, but there was lots of prep time and we're a day out now...

Those familiar with the fringe of RI politics will know Anne Armstrong & Allen Waters.

I swear to god, when they're chirping at each other, I don't know what to do.

I support whoever points out they're terrible candidates & looney tunes... but I don't want to be in agreement with either of them.

While I dispute the school's dogma generally (I mean, c'mon, no utility theory?), I suspect that, "The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to [people] how little they really know about what they imagine they can design," is largely pretty accurate.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to cover the RI GOP’s party chair race on Jan. 29.

Acting Chair Niyoka Powell says the election “is closed to the media” following an executive committee vote.

Not good for transparency, this is a bad call.

Here's a question: if you didn't have to opt-in to having your identity stolen, why should you have to opt-in to the settlement?

@peterfneronha.bsky.social maybe your boy can run on making this a state a place where class actions are about more than attorneys' billable hours.

Opinions are like orifices & @danmcgowan.bsky.social mistook his orifice for a hat on line-item veto.

It is not a good government measure & the version proposed is broad enough to make the governor a lawmaker.

Even the limited version is unnecessary; they can just not spend the money.
Line-item is there strictly politically.

Not only is it a bad idea, & likely unconstitutional, but it never gets through.

And. It. Shouldn't.
RI Governor McKee’s proposed budget calls for millionaires tax and line-item veto. McKee is proposing a budget of $14.9b, an increase of $522.6m, as the state grapples with Trump administration funding cuts and policy changes. -- With @stephmachado.bsky.social

The simplicity of this proposal is pure politics.

For those wanting to deal with affordability & fairness, start by balancing the regressive existing income tax structure.

Then include more tax types, broadening bases & lower rates for other tax types.
Economic Progress Institute Executive Director Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies responds to Gov. McKee's state budget proposal, saying, the proposal "to create a 4th tax bracket – an additional 3 percent on taxable income above $1 million – is a good start towards increasing tax fairness in RI."

If the house finance chairman isn't available today, how was the budget legislation being introduced?
January 15, 2026 at 9:22 PM
Would be a major win for Amore.
Legislation introduced by state Rep. Joe McNamara would move RI's presidential preference primary to be the first Tuesday of March as opposed to April's final Tuesday.

I don't think the second part (make his case to Dem primary voters) is actually true. The number of undecided Democratic primary voters watching tonight is negligible.

Really, he has to convince political analysts that he has made a decent case to be the Democratic nominee, so they can tell voters.
