It’s publication day in Nth America for The Grimmelings, my middlegrade ‘horse girl folk horror’ which blends Scottish folklore with an unsettling New Zealand landscape, about a girl and a vengeful kelpie. Out in HB *and* PB! www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Gr... #spookymg #kidlit #middlegrade

Jaimie Veale, the founding president of PATHA and Director of the Trans Health Research Lab at Waikato has written an excellent op-ed for the Conversation: "The government has placed a burden of proof on puberty blockers that we do not place on other paediatric care."
Puberty blockers: why politicians overriding doctors sets a dangerous precedent
The government’s ban on puberty blockers undermines clinical expertise and targets trans youth with a policy that lacks evidence, consistency and fairness.

It’s an honour to have a starred review in The Horn Book, one of the most respected journals of children’s literature (for 101 years!) only to have @moderation.bsky.app label them as spam. What a disservice to children’s books, which struggle to get media coverage. How can this be fixed? #kidlit

Just waiting for them to take lotteries money away from CNZ and direct it towards roads.
While the finance minister "kicks the tyres" on overhaul of national lottery, a coalition partner rules out any change.

They illegally blocked a best practices document the government commissioned from experts and then disregarded it.
Zero surprises that the brainless transphobic health minister in NZ ignored all expert advice and evidence and banned puberty blockers for trans youth. Literal blood on his hands.

Does anybody know if Wellington hospital still gives out new baby packs to all babies including a picture book? It was there when I had my baby 19 years ago. I’d love to see that for all NZ children along with encouragement to start reading straight away. I saw some amazing research about benefits.

I just did a very quick & unofficial count: since 2020, there have been 13 books by new Māori writers published (approx 6 years). In the whole of the 2010s, there were 7 new Māori writers published. Significantly, 7 of the 13 since 2020 wrote novels. Significant change!
