Political campaigns now burn 30¢ of every dollar raised just fundraising for more dollars (up from 9¢ in 2004).

In 2024, $3 Billion was spent on fundraising.

In 2026, fundraising costs are on track to exceed advertising spending for the first time.

New WP thread! 🤓 Vietnam's solar panel exports boomed between 2018 and 2022. With my PhD student Meng Yu Ngov, Trang Thu Tran, and Gaurav Nayyar we look at how this industry success can be attributed to attracting FDI and importing parts and components, as well to Chinese subsidy spillovers.👇

"Because USD rallied during the crisis, there is an assumption that foreign investors moved funds into the US [...]

The bid for US bonds came from central banks [...], not private investors.

[...] While foreign capital fled the US, US capital also fled global markets and returned home in 2008."
Foreign Money Flowed Out of the US, Not In, During the Global Financial Crisis

Good morning, everyone. After introducing my book about looted art yesterday, let me tell you more about what's in there. Today is about Napoleon. Napoleon stole a lot of shit, no really, it was insane. In fact, the era of systematic state-sponsored looting on mass scale began with Napoleon. thread👇

I wrote a whole paper about revisions! They are a statistical best practice but can erode public trust in institutions. Governments don't revise their data unless they're forced to - which is why revisions are more prevalent among democracies (see Ireland, Greece)

These boxplots present the distribution of current GDP estimates for (A) Greece and (B) Ireland from 1990 to 2020, using data drawn from the 104 WDI releases from April 1994 to December 2021. The estimate reported for Greece in 2005 is 70 billion dollars (32.78 percent) larger in the April 2008 WDI than in the April 2007 WDI. The estimate reported for Ireland in 2015 is 53.8 billion dollars (22.6 percent) larger in the December 2017 WDI than in the July 2016 WDI.

I think there are a lot more people here that broadly share your politics than you seem to believe, which is why I will say that this "Bluesky sucks, prove me wrong" bit/trope/bait can be quite tiresome and off-putting for a lot of your readers.
