IT DIDN'T GET JINXED

My new retro purchase is this arcade cabinet which formerly stood in an Arbroath pub. The 1942 arcade PCB was included.

I spent a good part of yesterday making space and shuffling things around for it.

"The Trump regime is a disaster not just for public health in the US, but worldwide. There has been a great deal of discussion of the ways in which Trump’s reckless foreign policy has put global security at risk. But US abandonment of public health leadership may well be even more consequential."
Trump somehow got worse on public health after covid
He's incapable of learning lessons and actively resists it.

Comet 3I/ATLAS faded from the news once it became impossible to sustain the "alien spaceship" fantasy. But the science kept going!

Studies from the SPHEREx satellite show how water escaped from the interstellar comet, exposing buried dust & organic molecules. 🧪🔭

Great article from @rboyle31.bsky.social on mysterious Little Red Dots and how they might represent a class of objects we've never really seen before: a stellar atmosphere powered by black hole accretion.

stay tuned for a spicy alternative take that should appear on the arXiv later this week! 🧪🔭

Tochigi Prefecture is Japan’s strawberry capital. It has ideal conditions for strawberries: cold winters, large day–night temperature differences, plenty of sunshine and volcanic soil. When in Tochigi, don’t miss chance to enjoy strawberry sweets or ride a strawberry-themed train.

Maybe AI will destroy the world by the bubble sucking up all the resources to feed a technology that doesn't really work and people don't actually want?

No need for Skynet to become sentient and launch the nukes when a massive con job is destroying the global supply chains.

i think lots of people underestimate how badly these “AI” companies want people to be unable to afford computers. they view personal computing as a roadblock to their desire for complete end-to-end centralization. the fact that their tech is putting hardware out of reach is not just a happy accident

It’s going to sound quaint, but the best way to resist an AI takeover of the humanities is to assign physical books, sit around, read them, and argue about ideas. Academic has become such a competitive arena, that we ourselves are trained to look for the winning angle, instead of the best education.

My favourite example of this was watching an episode of Coast talking to two old ladies who worked gutting fish on the docks, knee-deep in bloodies innards with the sea water pushing it around their bare legs, and calling it "The happiest days of our lives" or somesuch bollocks.
If you’ve been lucky enough to have never seen Corned Beef of my Childhood, your luck has just run out. And don’t think you’ve escaped, ALT text users, you’re getting it too.
