It's telling how the government responds to Indigenous concerns. The fact that issues like water, land sovereignty, services for children, access to healthcare, food security etc end up in courts rather than just fixed speaks to the lack of accountability the gov't feels. Reconciliation? lol. lmao

I'll say again: we are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.

We say Amtrak and the post office "lose money" but we never say highways, the court system, the Pentagon, etc lose money
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

The American business world is starting to feel like the Highlander.

"From the dawn of time Corporations came…moving silently down through the centuries, living many secret mergers, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering, when the few who remain will battle to the last."

Lucasfilm is celebrating the film's 50th anniversary on February 17, 2027, in the best possible way.

Safety. Regulations. Are. Written. In. Blood.
People don’t understand that stripping the guardrails of regulation and oversight doesn’t just apply to like better business bureau type shit but also like on a practical level when I get into an elevator I expect that it has passed a safety inspection & that type of security will be gone soon

Do you want
A) all the AI with no ethical guardrails
B) most of the AI with no ethical guardrails
C) the MOST AI with no ethical guardrails
D) only a little AI with no ethical guardrails, no monitoring in case we want to use it all anyway
E) other (explain why you're a bad person, 5 words or less)
My kids’ school district sent us a survey about what we think they should do to use AI responsibly in education, and I can tell by the way the questions were phrased, they’re going to do it over the vehement and detailed objections I listed in the “other, please elaborate.”

Tonight, with a full heart, I shared this in our Vancouver Island Healthcare Infusion online community.

What began as a couple of TikTok videos has turned into something far bigger: a national circle of neighbours helping bring healthcare workers home to their communities.

They are beating people who maybe once had a broken taillight and sending them to foreign slave prisons while freeing the worst fraudsters and every corrupt pol. The juxtaposition is so stark and appalling.
NEW: The commutation Trump issued to David Gentile wipes away all further fines & restitution.

Gentile had been sentenced to 7 years for his role in a $1.6B scheme that defrauded thousands of investors.

Prosecutors had been seeking $15.5M in forfeiture.

This piece hit hard for me, as it tracks with why my daughter stopped playing soccer at recess. The boys wouldn't let the girls play with them--only against them and with fewer players. But when girls scored anyway, some boys would cheat and play to hurt the girls, to the point where it wasn't fun.
"the issue isn’t that we need more 'boy-friendly' reforms. It’s that boys are socialized to compete only with boys and to read girls’ success as illegitimate or emasculating. The result is dissonance, resentment, and disengagement for boys—and hostile climates for girls."
