My friends at Niemanreports.org asked me to write about the experience of being a journalist on the ground in Minneapolis right now. I knew I wanted to tell reporters elsewhere how even this most hopeless of times has been clarifying and, in some ways, energizing. (1) share.google/ms1wKDQZmgep...

This is where people would exit from appearing in 4th Judicial District Housing Court (& other courts), and my understanding is that the 4th JD (Hennepin) is still having initial eviction action appearances in-person rather than remote (unlike everywhere else in the state).

EVICTION MORATORIUM NOW.
video sent to me from the hennepin county government center this morning of hennepin county sheriff deputies standing by as plainclothes federal agents detain two people

agents have been hanging out in the lobby for days now

If you're one of Palmisano's constituents who's contributed to any rent relief fundraisers, please call her office and tell her so. Because (as always) the landlords have her ear already.
Council Member Palmisano: "We've all been exploring how to best show up with what we can possibly afford with city dollars in this moment." But she's heard from landlord group that rent collections are tracking with normal right now.

I wonder, council member palmisano, if that’s happening because activists are moving heaven and earth to make sure people who are unable to pay rent are getting landlords their money. nah there’s probably nothing going on

Come the fuck on. Does they want to see all of our donation transactions????? This pisses me off. I'm glad rent collections are normal but it's because all of us neighbors are chipping in on top if our own rent & mortgages!!!!!

I can not believe that in a City under Federal occupation we have several CMs saying ‘well fraud might happen and some people might get denied’ as reasons they don’t want to enact emergency rental assistance for our most vulnerable. If you don’t want to help people, why run for office?!
Chughtai, in wide eyed wonder at what she's hearing, responds to idea that the undeserving will exploit rental assistance: if you have income at the level of minimum wage, couldn't pay your rent for whatever reason, and you've been served an eviction notice, you're by definition a person in need.

Today I led the City Council to allocate $1 million to provide emergency rent assistance to families facing eviction due to ICE’s ongoing occupation. This action was in response to Gov Walz failure to enact an eviction moratorium, leaving thousands of renters across Mpls vulnerable to eviction.
Minneapolis allocates additional $1 million for rental assistance
The City of Minneapolis will allocate $1 million in funds for emergency rental assistance, as families impacted by the ongoing federal immigration operation seek help paying bills.

Wonsley: please submit your evidence of rental assistance fraud to county government across the street, otherwise "consider joining the MAGA movement."

At today’s City Council meeting, we unanimously approved $500,000 in additional funding for immigration legal services.

We also approved $1,000,000 in rental assistance with a 9-4 vote. A spokesperson for Mayor Frey said he would not comment on the proposal until after we take it up. 1/

I’m on the scene at Franklin and 1st. A convoy of about a couple dozen ICE/HSI agents broke the entryway into an apartment building at 6am. No warrant presented. Less than 24 hours ago, Tom Homan announced the end of large convoys in Minnesota… Bullshit.

Tomorrow City Council will be taking up “Pause Evictions, Save Lives” to temporarily increase the required notice for eviction to 60 days to give families an extra month to make rent.

No family should have to choose between keeping a roof over their head and risking being kidnapped by ICE.

Abolish ICE.

There’s no reforming it.

There’s no compromise.

There’s only one way to rein in ICE’s terror campaign. Abolish it.

On Saturday, Jan 31st TCDSA hosted an ICE Out of MN action that shut down the Target in Dinkytown!

People gathered to picket, including Democratic Socialist Ward 2 City Councilor Robin Wonsley who spoke, demanding Target stand with Minnesotans to say ICE OUT NOW.

Target is Minnesota’s 4th largest employer. For months Target has stayed silent as ICE abducts our neighbors and murders legal observers–all while looking the other way as ICE stages in Target parking lots.

@governorwalz.mn.gov rent is due today. You are not powerless. You can minimize these abductions and violence to residents of this state by letting people shelter-in until this federal occupation is over. Enact an eviction moratorium now.
They’re taking kids from Minnesota and sending them to detention camps. They’re shooting American citizens in the street and locking investigators out of the crime scenes. The world is watching what happens next.

Journalists Georgia Fort and Don Lemon were taken into custody for covering a protest—an attack on the First Amendment.

The charges are unclear. That’s the point. This is intimidation to silence resistance against Trump’s cruel immigration and unjust agenda.

Free them all. Drop the charges ✊🏾.

Across Minneapolis, our community is out here every day. Watching over our streets. Making sure our kids get to school safely. Delivering groceries to our neighbors. Doing everything we can to protect one another.

We need elected leaders at all levels of government to do the same.

Border Czar Bovino leaving MPLS doesn’t change the fact that we still have 2,000+ ICE agents occupying our city. Ordinary people in our community are meeting the moment, but we need our elected officials to do the same.

Spanish language calls for rent assistance are up 1,646%. On a recent day, the line soared to more than 1,000 callers with 130 people in queue.
