Minneapolis residents have been very clear: being a sanctuary city means no collaboration with ICE and federal immigration enforcement. City Hall is meant to be a space of and for the people of our city.

We aren’t resting until ICE is out of MN. We aren’t stopping until ICE is completely abolished. They want us to bend the knee so they can continue separating families, but we won’t be doing that. We’re going to win, and it’s bc of the resiliency of our neighbors.

Minneapolis council member Chavez: We are not going to rest until ICE operation ends
While DHS said that it removed about 700 agents from the 3,000 that were in the state last week, Minneapolis City Council member Jason Chavez says he hasn’t seen much change on the ground.

We’ve heard about body cameras before. They didn’t stop police brutality, and they’re not going to stop ICE’s terror. To federal Democrats: let’s be bold for once and fight to ABOLISH ICE.

"People are disappointed because the state [and Gov Walz] has options, and it’s refusing to use them. Instead of an eviction moratorium so people can shelter in place, we get the political version of a boss’s pizza party: symbolic comfort and no material protection.”

“To go to work, to go to school, and then to do patrols? It’s not law enforcement that is protecting civilians. Civilians literally have to go out with their own bodies — and phones, and cars — and patrol communities.”
February 7, 2026 at 4:02 PM
“Walz even said himself that what working-class people are experiencing is like Anne Frank — that people are afraid to go outside because doing so means risking their lives. If you see that, why are you still forcing people to go outside when they don’t have to?”

Please join us to share your stories of how ICE agents residing in our communities have led to unsafe outcomes and conditions. Public comment will take place Tuesday Feb 17.

With ICE agents filling up our hotels, residents deserve to be able to weigh in on hotel liquor license renewals. Proud to have voted “yes” to delay these renewals on Tuesday.

My friends at Niemanreports.org asked me to write about the experience of being a journalist on the ground in Minneapolis right now. I knew I wanted to tell reporters elsewhere how even this most hopeless of times has been clarifying and, in some ways, energizing. (1) share.google/ms1wKDQZmgep...

This is where people would exit from appearing in 4th Judicial District Housing Court (& other courts), and my understanding is that the 4th JD (Hennepin) is still having initial eviction action appearances in-person rather than remote (unlike everywhere else in the state).

EVICTION MORATORIUM NOW.
video sent to me from the hennepin county government center this morning of hennepin county sheriff deputies standing by as plainclothes federal agents detain two people

agents have been hanging out in the lobby for days now

If you're one of Palmisano's constituents who's contributed to any rent relief fundraisers, please call her office and tell her so. Because (as always) the landlords have her ear already.
Council Member Palmisano: "We've all been exploring how to best show up with what we can possibly afford with city dollars in this moment." But she's heard from landlord group that rent collections are tracking with normal right now.

I wonder, council member palmisano, if that’s happening because activists are moving heaven and earth to make sure people who are unable to pay rent are getting landlords their money. nah there’s probably nothing going on

Come the fuck on. Does they want to see all of our donation transactions????? This pisses me off. I'm glad rent collections are normal but it's because all of us neighbors are chipping in on top if our own rent & mortgages!!!!!

I can not believe that in a City under Federal occupation we have several CMs saying ‘well fraud might happen and some people might get denied’ as reasons they don’t want to enact emergency rental assistance for our most vulnerable. If you don’t want to help people, why run for office?!
Chughtai, in wide eyed wonder at what she's hearing, responds to idea that the undeserving will exploit rental assistance: if you have income at the level of minimum wage, couldn't pay your rent for whatever reason, and you've been served an eviction notice, you're by definition a person in need.

We’ll still be passing “Pause Evictions, Save Lives” but it won’t be done before rent is next due on March 1st.
February 5, 2026 at 11:23 PM
CMs Pearll Warren, Elizabeth Shaffer, Michael Rainville, LaTrisha Vetaw and Linea Palmisano voted against the expedited introduction of “Pause Evictions, Save Lives” to temporarily increase the required notice for eviction to 60 days to give families an extra month to make rent.

It was beyond disappointing to hear several of my colleagues repeat baseless concerns of fraud at Hennepin County—mirroring the rhetoric we heard from Trump and his lackeys as they kicked off ICE's occupation of our city that has created the need for this rent assistance in the first place.

Today I led the City Council to allocate $1 million to provide emergency rent assistance to families facing eviction due to ICE’s ongoing occupation. This action was in response to Gov Walz failure to enact an eviction moratorium, leaving thousands of renters across Mpls vulnerable to eviction.
Minneapolis allocates additional $1 million for rental assistance
The City of Minneapolis will allocate $1 million in funds for emergency rental assistance, as families impacted by the ongoing federal immigration operation seek help paying bills.

At today’s City Council meeting, we unanimously approved $500,000 in additional funding for immigration legal services.

We also approved $1,000,000 in rental assistance with a 9-4 vote. A spokesperson for Mayor Frey said he would not comment on the proposal until after we take it up. 1/
