In a way it's like the New York Times has become like TV networks used to be, where the entertainment programming finances the public service of the news side.
This is a fascinating graphic, showing how critical non-news elements have been to the NY Times' spectacular growth.

You can see why the Washpost, which is basically a single-product new offering, can't begin to keep up. (And then add in those boneheaded decisions by Bezos and Lewis.)
