One thing I’ve noticed about both Nigel Farage and the US president is that, when they speak, we disproportionately see their front bottom teeth, often to the exclusion of the top teeth. Do they train for this? I tried doing it on purpose and it was very difficult and made me look like a real uggo.

Nenko Stanev Gantchev died in ICE custody in Michigan. He was from Chicago. Lived in the US for decades. He was diabetic and wasn't given any special regards for meals to manage his blood sugar.

His family have gotten no answers.

My brother's school in St Paul, MN, is putting together a needs pantry/mutual aid thing for students and families who need help surviving the ICE occupation. He's said a lot of his students have been staying home from school because it's unsafe to go out. There are ways to donate if you're not local

This little cat Kerel was found and reunited with (her? or his?) parents after an explosion last Thursday in a nearby house destroyed their own home. Kerel lost some whiskers and had a few burns, but is going to be okay. All people are okay, but several homes and businesses suffered serious damage.

Markets and Mobility: How Employers Structure Economic Opportunity Intergenerational mobility, measuring the ability to achieve economic success regardless of family background, is a critical reflection of a society’s commitment to equality of opportunity. Rising income inequality has raised concerns about the potential erosion of upward mobility. While education has traditionally been viewed as the path to mobility, its transformative power is facing challenges in a rapidly evolving job market. This project reorients the focus of intergenerational mobility research by highlighting the labor market as an arena for the reproduction of advantage. It employs a comparative approach, using administrative data from four countries: Sweden, Austria, England, and the United States. It also incorporates evidence from a broader set of nations through cross-national surveys, longitudinal household surveys, labor force surveys, secondary data, and digital trace data. The project employs cutting-edge empirical methods, including quasi- experimental designs, event studies, within-family comparisons, decomposition analyses, counterfactual simulations, and diagnostic checks to rigorously assess the extent of inequalities in the labor market. The research investigates how family background influences the sorting of individuals to employers and workplaces, accounting for education and occupation, and explores variations in career progression within and between employers. It comprehensively catalogues and assesses mechanisms shaping workplace inequality, contributing to the development of social closure theory. Additionally, the project evaluates intervention strategies, encompassing both employer practices and government actions, to promote fair opportunity in the labor market.

An update. Some of the cats we see each year may be missing due to the explosion and may have run off. We are so cat-focused when we walk through that area that I actually recognize at least one of the cats from photos. (Folks can’t get into the blocked off area yet to search for their pets.)

Wondering whether the sustained deployment of federal law enforcement to US cities erodes existing trust in local law enforcement. In other words, once ICE/CBP leave, will folks who previously would have called the police now hesitate? Will people be less likely to cooperate with investigations?
