Another alien, obviously, but this one looked even more alien than what I’ve seen before. Except for the face, the face is the closest thing to human as I’ve seen since getting abducted by aliens. What the hell is my life right now. The skin is purplish, and their hair is long and black, similar to my own. They have two orange eyes, a nose and a mouth, all very human in appearance. Then the rest of their body has to be considered. Their neck is slightly thicker, but the body is at least twice as thick as my own, because it has to carry all the muscle for no less than four arms, two on either side. Each arm is twice as thick as my own. They are as tall as I am, from what I can tell in my current position near the floor. They’re wearing something that looks like a cross between business formal and star trek, mostly black or dark grey, covering most of the massive body. This all ended in three legs, side by side as if a human had grown an extra leg between the two they already had.

Thirteen of them. Thirteen little ogres with their own personalities but a shared obsession with shoes, for some reason. Quite fascinating, really, but not at all her area of expertise. Now, spriggans, she could understand. Well, not so much understand, as such, but they were plant-like creatures. Flirty knew where she was with plants. She turned over the page, back to the start of the entry, and read from the beginning, taking a sip of cold tea, regretting it, then taking another sip.

I am once again staring at my Gateway. This electronic temptress, usually only good for revealing sexual acts I have no hope of commiting, now holds another forbidden pleasure; knowledge. The original sin. The dial-up noise is too loud for the hour of the night. The DSL people need to hurry up and free my geographic location from the restraints of using the telephone lines for all forms of communication. I hate how other people can physically hear when I am surfing the Information Super Highway. This is supposed to be a private affair. The electronic noise ceases its Internet summoning song. I am now free to lose my sanity.

In this chapter, we take a break from the shenanigans at the Good Thyme Inn to look at what's going on with the royalty. Duke Scortho is the consort of Queen Ruphelia and the father of the heir to the throne, Princess Zola, a physically weak young woman.
It was because of her weakness and unsightly slim arms that she hid them under poofy sleeves. And because she hid them, now every noblewoman and courtier in the Queendom wore the same style of sleeve. As the heir to the Dawn Throne, court fashion was hers to dictate. “Father, is bring a princess enough? I fear I lack the grace or… or…” She stopped and swallowed. “Th-the ability to speak well enough to attract a worthy suitor.” “Being a princess is more than enough,” he said while stroking a sapphire ring in his beard. “The suitors I’ve invited to the ball would fight each other with knives and claws for the privilege of marrying you.” Zola glanced downward. After all the trouble she went through to give birth to Cinna… She had only been eighteen years old when Lord Scortho introduced her to a nice prince from one of the neighboring kingdoms—a kingdom, not a queendom. Cinna had no chance of inheriting that throne.

We have no idea what we’d be walking into, and I doubt they are giving guided tours,” Av’ry noted. “Ah, but that’s where you are wrong.” Fox’s eyes glimmered deviously. “What are you suggesting, Fox?” Av’ry shot her a suspicious look. “As it happens, the people who own the temple are ready to debut their renovations. Three days from now, they are hosting a very exclusive gala, invitation only, for every noble within travelling distance. They have all been called for what the invitations promise will be a historical unveiling.” “Of what?” Mikiva raised an eyebrow. “They are a bit vague on that point. You know how nobles like an exclusive, mysterious event. Draws them like moths to a flame.” “True.” Mikiva nodded, thoughtfully. “But how does that help us? We aren’t exactly nobility, nor do we have an invite.” “Wrong again. Or rather, half-correct.” Fox chuckled. “We do, of course, have an invitation. And the nobility part is easy enough to fake.” She tossed the envelope down on the table.

“I just think it would be best for both of us to keep to ourselves from now on, and only deal with each other when it’s absolutely necessary.” She gave him a stern look. “Yaiaku?” Any semblance of lightheartedness had completely abandoned Kena at this point. He glowered straight ahead, radiating quiet anger, his mouth pressed into a hard line. “You know,” he remarked, “there’s this amazing thing they’ve invented called tact. You ought to try it sometime.” “I don’t need tact. I say things as they are.” “Even if it means telling someone to their face that you want nothing to do with them?” “Would you prefer I lied to you to make you feel better?” Kena scowled. “So you’re not even going to give me a chance? You don’t know anything about me!” “No,” she replied. “And you don’t know anything about me.” “I feel I’m beginning to,” he muttered. “Young gods.” Sister Zu’uvit gestured at them. “It’s time.” Through the doorway, they could hear Xa’aba’s speech building up to the climactic moment when the two of them would step through that door and face the Na’aqal people for the first time. Kena lifted up his hand stiffly, and she took it as limply as possible. Both of them stared straight ahead, bitter and fuming, as they walked forward together. The cheer that went up from the crowd was loud enough to be heard in all Eleven Worlds.

“What are you up to?” Obito warily asked. The question left his mouth often, but with good reason—while he could say it with immense affection, his partner was a menace. “Such accusations.” Daisuke grinned. “I’ll have you know, I became a man today.” Obito’s expression suggested he was curious, but too worried about the answer to pry any further. Snickering, Daisuke gathered his hair and pulled it back to show off the new piercing in his left ear, beaming with pride as he tilted his head to give his partner a better view. His upper ear was still red around the gold hoop and the ball clasp resting in his inner ear. Daisuke’s smile softened as he took Obito’s hand, guiding his fingers to delicately brush the pink and green feathers.

The alchemists collect a variety of substances which either have magical properties in this world or can be used some other way in their magical-chemistry.

It reminds Shallot of her mother's house, which she can't stand.
Every day, the underground alchemy lab grew closer to the sort of house Granny Tomamato kept. Dried herbs hung from the rafters; ingredients of bone and plant matter lined bookshelves; crystals and minerals of all shapes, colors, and luster sat in boxes against a wall. Nobody ever saw Cookie or Sage leave to collect ingredients—they could afford to hide themselves under a Shroud potion before leaving, then collect the ingredients to make a hundred more batches of Shroud while on their quest. They were on one such mission today, leaving the lab under Aubergine and Grilled’s custody. The only potions being brewed were on a low boil for the next twenty hours. The more it looked like Tomamato’s house, the less Shallot came down. If asked, she would claim that she wanted to leave the alchemists to their business. They were good and responsible people, and she didn’t have to supervise them. Aubergine suspected the truth to be that Shallot didn’t want to be in a space that reminded her so much of her mother’s house of superstitious nonsense. Even though this lab was full of useful materials and she was making good money off of it, the aesthetic was hauntingly similar. An insectoid girl with compound eyes, segmented limbs, and wings. She's holding a potion and dressed in a semi-steampunk style

Instead, Northton had an annual rodeo and a weekly farmers’ market. She worked weekends at her parent’s stall selling organic beeswax candles, incense and crystals. Tourists and boys trying to hit on her were the only ones who ever stopped by. Unlike her mom and dad, she fit in. She made sure of it.

Dust and ash and debris billowed up above the tops of the high rises. Dark clouds boiled down the grid of streets. The flickering light of early morning did reach the asphalt in bits and pieces. Crystals grew up and over high rises and tanks and power armor. Wherever the crystals met a power line or a transformer, sparks flew and electricity arced. Civilians lay trapped and entombed in crystal that had formed a massive dome. The air swarmed with crystal wasps. And inside the dome, the Basilisk loomed above the skyline a great purple dragon with three eyes.

“Let’s get on with it then.” Spencer drained the remains of his port in one long gulp and set the glass on the table with a soft clink. “What’s the departed’s name?” “The Honorable Duke Shelton Bryce Cormier Var Dunnis, Shelly to his friends.” “Bit of a mouthful, isn’t it?” Spencer hoisted two wooden chairs lining the wall and carted them to the reading table. Wren picked up the ring and set it neatly on the black cloth-covered surface beside a folded scrap of paper. “Oh, you know how it is with nobles,” she smirked, taking a seat at the table. “The length of your name is directly proportional to your level of swank.” With a chuckle, Spencer took the chair opposite her and tugged at the corner of the silk square covering the summoning crystal. It slid free in a pale waterfall of fabric. Spreading his hands across the table, he cleared his throat and looked at Wren. She gave a nod, signaling that she was ready. Spencer laid his left hand over the ring and touched the base of the crystal with his right. Wren had seen mediums and card readers with polished crystal balls before, but Spencer used a solid chunk of six-sided quartz with spires jutting out of a rocky base. Darkening from clear at the tips to smokey gray near the bottom, the thing was nearly as large as her head. I’d need a mule and a pulley if I wanted to nick it.

Though in the privacy of their room with the guqin playing softly from afar, when Daisuke looped a necklace with a shard of rose quartz around Obito’s neck with trembling hands, then dipped his head so his partner could do the same, it only seemed right to trade at least one of the three ceremonial bows—the one meant for each other. No blessing that would never come was needed from their families, no promise that they’d never keep made to the heavens; only the truth about how they felt for one another mattered. A union, but without the baggage of marriage.

Well I have been kinda taking a break from Mireia snips lately, but considering the main source of magic power in Atalantis is crystals... here we are 😅

Mireia's first time using a kaana crystal, from Book 1 of my #Atlantis trilogy.
Still holding the crystal aloft, Mireia closed her eyes, digging deep inside herself. She stoked the fire of her anger, of her determination to escape, of her will to see this room destroyed. She dove deep into that desire as though she were diving into the sea. She let go of herself and became a droplet in the ocean of her own focused will. In her mind she conjured a clear image of the wall before her dissolving—breaking apart into a million particles, which would break into a million more, which would shatter into nothing. The wall itself, she suddenly thought, was like the sea: not a single object, but a mass of infinitely small droplets that could be scattered and evaporated like water. That was all the whole world was, she saw. Every tree and rock and wave and building and person. Just uncountable clusters of droplets bumping against droplets, that could all be broken down and reshaped however she pleased. And beyond this world—beyond the walls of reality—there were other worlds, all made of droplets, all only droplets themselves in a vast sea of universes. And through it all, there was a current that flowed—a bloodstream. It was the same current now running between her body and that crystal. It was a snaking river that threaded the worlds together like beads on a string. It wove and sang and gusted through all the spaces between the droplets, and Mireia was the sail that could catch it. The energy was pulsing through her body, circulating through her veins. “There is no wall,” she declared, and her voice sounded low and strange, as if it belonged to someone else. “It’s only droplets. There is no wall! It’s only droplets!” A small light sparked to life inside the crystal.
