As someone who has experienced both Peterson Academy (one week) and an accredited Alberta university (5 years, oops) it is striking to me that Albertan officials were discussing "transferability." The most rigorous testing PA did is an AI-generated multiple choice quiz. thetyee.ca/News/2025/12...

That's not what these products provide.

Also, she was probably fine with talking about the weather "out there" a few times a year before insisting I must be busy and she should "let me get back to it" (in between birthday and Christmas cards).

Respect the dead. Don't touch this ghoulish tech.

AI products that do a shitty impression of someone’s dead loved one for money are some of the most depraved and sadistic forms of “big tech innovation” that I’ve seen. Like the emotional manipulation and disrespecting the dead IS the product

Council will consider $12,150,000 in transit cuts during next week's budget debate. This is what that will look like.
On the chopping block:
• accessibility training for drivers
• accessibility improvements at stops
• end evening service on Sundays
• cancel 4 planned driver positions

Yeah. We’re wading in a sewer pond. Undergrad students especially, how are they going to tell.
Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).

i strongly, strongly believe that good writing is downstream of clear thinking and a strong understanding of the subject matter at hand. without fail, tortured writing comes from writers who don’t know and can’t think clearly about anything.
Oh man! This paragraph is brutal. The best thing about this review is it's not trying to be mean. It's just listing how bad the writing is.

Gutted to hear about the death of Daniel Woodrell, one of *the* all-time great noir writers. WINTER’S BONE, TOMATO RED, and so many more — but also, not nearly enough — books.

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Reminder: you don't have to engage with AI as an instructor. You can talk about AI--even build AI literacy, if you want to call it that--and still not engage directly with a brutal, unethical, ecologically disastrous bundle of technologies. Regardless of institutional pressure, you can refuse.

LLMs are word generators. They were trained on the writings of humans who describe their own consciousness, so the fact that they mimic (or outright replicate) those writings when told to be more factual isn't strange.

The idea that any of this output is eerie is propaganda.
Switching off AI's ability to lie makes it more likely to claim it's conscious, eerie study finds
Leading AI models from OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic and Google described subjective, self-aware experiences when settings tied to deception and roleplay were turned down.

I always laugh when someone calls me a ‘paid shill’ for mentioning the scientific consensus on vaccines. If I really wanted to make money, I’d target people’s biases with sensational, polarizing content—the stuff that spreads fast, builds big followings, and turns outrage into revenue.
