Parents are putting one of their cats down on Monday 😔

She's a good cat, but she's also like 13 years old and be-cancered. And so.

This site targets not just authors, but small press zines and anthologies - including Clarkesworld, Neon Hemlock, Apex, and the Science Fiction Poetry Association.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

If you're wondering about the sort of person who becomes a writer, for 3 years every day I have played chess with this one person and for 3 years I have lost every day and every day I go back for another go because this time could be the charm, it could happen, you never know

IMO the weird exception some supposed leftists seem to make for condemning-the-theft-of-labor-except-art-lol-steal-that-shit is just a weird intersection with puritan "if you enjoy yourself, it's not a real job" brainworms.

"fun" job = member of the leisure class (ROFL) = fair game. Somehow.
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

If writing is so easy why do people argue that they can’t do it without the pablumatic verbiage extruder

And if it’s so difficult then why do people think it’s not labour and writers are not workers

Discovered today that the graphology pseudoscientists have apparently decided that "Handwriting that is primarily a trait of lefties who don't try to disguise that fact" means you are COLD and EMOTIONLESS.

I'm glad most lefties don't get beaten anymore, but the weirdest shit lingers, y'all

Saw something on Tumblr today that was discussing how to be "properly" leftist, we need to rid ourselves of "artifacts of liberal thought" we all have, and I genuinely had to read it like three times to understand that it was not actually someone trying to convince people into fascism.

Do you know how much of the cover price goes to a trad published writer? About 10-15%.

The various types of indie pub get a higher percentage (but have to do more work with virtually zero publicity budget).

How many publishers have been put out of business by piracy? Not a lot. Writers, tho'...

Machiavelli: It is better to be feared than loved, but you must absolutely avoid being *hated.*

So many forget that last part.
It is a bit alarming, when rereading Machiavelli's The Prince, that it lands as reportage rather than political theory. However, I find great comfort in the fact that they are really effing it up.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I think this extends to so many media formats at this point.

Even more recent books often to feel very....samey. The edges of voices and characters are very abbreviated and feel prepackaged as tropes and archetypes instead of any real attention to making them feel and sound like...people and places
This video puts to words some of the feelings I've had about modern movies/cgi/digital film but haven't been able to enunciate, but moreover nails a problem in modern art making: the lack of real, tactile experiences reflected in the work youtu.be/tvwPKBXEOKE?...

It’s very disconcerting, as a lesbian writing sapphic romances, to realize that a large swath of readers and writers basically treat you like a ghost. Or worse, they don’t treat you like anything because they don’t know or care that you exist.
