Really valuable and honest piece by friend and comrade @nikeshshukla.bsky.social about the anti-immigration protests at hotels this year.

There's a danger in trying to "understand" someone's hate if it's based on the faulty assumption that there's anything to understand in the first place.
If you choose to terrorise children, we have nothing in common
Following yet another anti-migrant hotel protest, Nikesh considers whether it’s even possible to engage with the other side

Does anybody know if there is an antiraids group in Birmingham? Need some support for somebody at risk heading there soon.

The attack on his niece was a few years ago. Everything this scumbag has done since has been with full awareness of what he's been empowering and emboldening.

To come out with this now is gobsmacking. I don't know how he's got the nerve.
Irks me when he says this because I’ve been at an LGBT event he’s been at, I’ve seen him attend others; he is in no way unaware of this being a problem nor his own role in it

Defund football
The warnings of the people who want you to spend £85 for a replica football shirt made in a sweatshop, rather than £15 for an identical replica replica shirt that for all they know might possibly have been made in the same sweatshop, read like something out of Brasseye.

Basically don’t give spyware for Christmas. Watches, speakers, doorbells need to stop being so nosy.
Probably the worst of them all is the Ring doorbell.

It’s sold as safety, but it’s much more about fear and paranoia in a box that turns you against your community. The more of them in the world, the worse our neighborhoods get. Don’t help the spiral continue.

I find Nolan’s films cold, clinical and soulless.
My hot take is they built a whole movie around one cool special effect and I think the movie stinks
Just showed the children Inception and as I warned them, it broke their brains

Faisal Islam and others are talking about the OBS report leak 2 hours early as "historic" and "catastophic". Why? Who cares? Boo-hoo, Reeves' literal speech wasn't quite the exact moment a few hundred people learned the details. What an asbolutely weird bubble Westmister correspondents live in!

End the BBC, burn it to the ground
It looks like that BBC page has been updated in the last few minutes, so that's no longer the last sentence. I think part of it has been moved to this paragraph in the middle of the article, and the age is no longer mentioned:

Most major cities have more than one university, 10s of thousands of students. Cafes, bars, nightclubs etc that thrive on their custom. Cleaners, security staff, caterers, grounds teams, maintenance staff etc etc. Collapsing the university sector will be catastrophic, wtf is wrong with these idiots
Obviously this government are wantonly reckless and idiotic and their treatment of universities, and see this as a disciplining of an out of touch elite.
But what all of this unwillingness to intervene means is that a critical industry will collapse and a lot of ordinary people will be unemployed.
"A system built on specialisation, efficiency", that right there is the death knell for the current university system in the UK, if (big if) government pushes it through. They actively don't want HE to grow, they will intervene, apparently, to help it shrink.

per this morning's education committee.
