The big “why do you hate AI?” Thread got comments and quotes turned off, but here’s the main reason I hate AI:

It’s being developed by the worst people on the planet solely to enrich themselves at the expense and labor of the world’s vulnerable populations. Everything else stems from that

Basically don’t give spyware for Christmas. Watches, speakers, doorbells need to stop being so nosy.
Probably the worst of them all is the Ring doorbell.

It’s sold as safety, but it’s much more about fear and paranoia in a box that turns you against your community. The more of them in the world, the worse our neighborhoods get. Don’t help the spiral continue.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

This year's #Arctic sea ice freeze-up is clearly the latest on record for the Baffin Bay region (located between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The extent of ice cover is a record low for the date there.

Any political “leader” still selling the obviously false choice between #ClimateAction and “the economy” is just reminding us that they clearly don’t understand either the climate crisis OR the economy.

Or they’re cynically hope that WE don’t understand the difference.

Or both.

Where heartwarming and horror meet. I am so grateful for acts of generosity and kindness like this. I am appalled and outraged that they are necessary. I have watched friends and family in the US struggle to afford their health care for years.

This is behind a paywall but based on the 2025 Coaching Report in Ontario.
It has some very troubling things to say about attitudes towards hazing. Link to report in reply.
Sports should be fun, safe, and accessible. They can be such a positive thing for children and youth. (Adults too!)
How bad is hazing in Ontario sports? A groundbreaking report reveals disturbing clues
The report by the Coaches Association of Ontario, released Tuesday, is based on a survey of 500 athletes and 500 unrelated parents.

And if you're a trans person with trans-supportive parents - tell them about Transparent Action too!

It's set up to counter the transphobia and support parents in taking a stand in an informed and safe way.
If you're a parent of a trans person, and you've read the excellent @transsafety.network article about how Wes Streeting is listening to anti-trans lobby groups like Bayswater Support Group, and you're wondering what you can do?

Wherever you live there are transgender people probably feeling a little vulnerable given the concerted, worldwide campaign against them right now.
If you are looking for concrete ways to offer support, campaigns like this can help people feel not quite so alone.

Ultimately the minimum wage is a brilliant tool, but it can’t compensate for “we haven’t built any housing”, “we have cut cash transfers to the bone” and “all the third spaces have been cut to pay for social care”.
The minimum wage is not a cure all — we’re asking too much of business
Politicians spend too much time uttering cheap rhetoric about cheap labour

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Spending time in hospitals as a patient, pastor, or support team, makes you incredibly aware of the team it takes to help when people are sick.every job is vital. And I am also glad to learn of the way that doctors work together to problem solve. Honestly churches could learn a thing or hundred.

This is the AI assumption.
We can just point an AI at someone and be a dr.
We can spill our problems to AI and it will be our therapist
We can give it a unique problem and it will just solve it.
Just so completely disrespectful and deluded about the idea that people may know things.
Everything about this might be the saddest thing I’ve ever seen

You can be mad that this is true. You can be mad at the current state of publishing (believe me, we are). You can even resolve only to buy direct from authors or exclusively from booksellers whose values align with yours. You can request books at the library.

You cannot ethically steal books.

My favorite time of year!

You’re not sticking it to the bigwigs, y’all. You’re hurting the authors of the books you like.

You can justify it all you like, but trad or indie, we can’t keep writing if books don’t sell.
I see it's the seasonal argument about why piracy to fuck over Amazon and publishers is okay while many authors live below the poverty line.

Also when everyone can plainly see it happening, writes about it, talks about it, and yet the party continues.
When it bursts people will be shocked, shocked I tell you. Why didn’t anyone say anything!!
(See also Enron, crypto market, subprime mortgage bubble… tulips etc.)
One sign of a bubble is when the major players do gimmicks to hide the cost of the bubble.

If the thing was clearly a good value, they'd just say "look at us investing in this valuable thing," rather than this obvious shell game to avoid booking the cost of building a data center.
Meta’s data-center accounting gets the Jon Weil treatment:

It’s “financed with debt, and neither the data center nor the debt will be on its own balance sheet. That outcome looks too good to be true, and it probably is.”

For real. Don't ask why not, don't act like it's weird, don't offer over and over again, and don't speculate about why with other people. Just offer a non-alcoholic alternative and move the fuck on.
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

I don’t know if I feel attacked or seen.
I am going to go hide behind my pile of books.
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

They’ve built one of the most horrifyingly precise targeted ads platforms in the world. You think they can’t figure out how to flag for a child safety team to check out when some middle-aged man messages dozens of kids? They can and often do, but that’s bad for “business” apparently.

Before people suggest I’m talking KOSA or age verification, etc, Facebook and Instagram already know so much about every user that they’re a go-to source for intelligence agencies. The algo already knows when an adult is messaging teenagers the platform is already monitoring for targeted ads.
