The pitch isn't buying an up to date card fresh from the supplier, it's buying a 1070 that was used in a Bitcoin mining rig for multiple years. You'd have to pay me to take it.
somfin.bsky.social
The lifespan of these cards is 3 to 5 years, with most warranties ending at 3. Do you want to buy a year 4, no warranty, post-AI, 4-versions-out-of-date server card right now, even at an incredible discount? Does anyone?

"At the end of every labour-process, we get a result that already existed in the imagination of the laborer at its commencement."

- Engels

And this is why AI will never replace artists or any creative labor.

It has no imagination. It cannot have it.

This applies to coding too! I'm not interested in the technical debt machine that is way more likely to fuck up than get it right and is guaranteed to steal the bit where I genuinely understand why the thing works. Writing is communication and art, but the AI folks have no respect for either.

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

I gave AI its fair shake, because I am an information professional and knowing what tools can do is part of my field. If it were a version of grammar check editing that could make my transitions better, kill off my adverbs for better vocabulary, I'd use it.

But it just inserts plagiarized cliches.

LLM AI exists to crush labour. That's not even my surmise, the people paying billions of dollars to fund this stuff are extremely open and explicit that this is their goal.

There are no ethical use cases for LLMs at this point in time. Maybe when the bubble has popped thoroughly. Not before.

every discussion i see on here that bears on banning gen ai in some fashion includes a code-is-speech guy who is like “good luck when anybody can run a model at home lol” and im like go for it. all 7 of you. ai would be relegated to a hobby on the level of say 3d printing

i think the fundamental disconnect here, and i say this as an engineer without much creative talent, is that a lot of people who don't do creative things regularly (or ever) look at creative output (writing, music, whatever) as a product, and consume and experience it like a baby looking at a mobile

SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Speaking from industry- that's mostly because optimising for mobile devices is a lot harder than not doing that, and most mobile games are made by teams with a budget that can fit in one pocket

I reckon it's far more libidinous, one of the chatbot providers applies rate limits in a way that cuts off a major investor who is addicted to the product, and the result is a power struggle that removes a chunk of load-bearing funding

So many people think that "ah you can't really tell an AI wrote this post or not!" is a gotcha.

Ok, let's say you're right. But if your post is shaped like an AI post, and your thoughts are shaped like AI thoughts, then the fact that there's no difference reflects rather poorly on you.

Every smartphone in the world contains a CPU descended from one designed by a trans woman in the 1980s. The Matrix is one of the most influential movie franchises of all time. Electronic music was pioneered and popularized by a trans woman. I could go on

i think my favourite part about being a trans woman is how much of an impact we have on culture. a friend reminded me today about a popular meme format she created. another friend today casually told me about how she was the most notorious roblox hacker when she was a child.

just a day in the life!

Strange immediate reaction: random AI booster account started going through liking a bunch of my posts so I just blocked them outright. Kinda assumed I was getting buttered up somehow? No idea.

The dark, madness-inducing secret to creative endeavors is that every single creation by humanity has at least one flaw that might only be known to the creator.

But they know it's there, and big or small, obvious or not, it haunts them even if only a tiny bit.
