There was ~a week where it seemed like I might end up moving somewhere more exciting, and then that died, and I saw the concert that had been the main thing I'd been looking forward to for months, and man... the future is just a bleak sea of 60+ hour weeks of doc review (w/occasional weeks of 0/$0).

you know that critique of ai that says it’s like taking a forklift to the gym and expecting to get stronger? well this bit of that guardian article about people using chatgpt in dating apps kinda proves it correct
Which is why the man who greeted her inside the pub – polite, pleasant but oddly flat – felt like a stranger. Gone was the quickfire wit and playful rhythm she’d come to expect from their exchanges. Over pints he stumbled through small talk, checked his phone a little too often, and seemed to wilt under the pressure of her questions. “I felt like I was sitting opposite someone I’d never even spoken to,” she says. “I tried to have the same sort of conversation as we’d been having online, but it was like, ‘Knock, knock, is anyone home?’ – like he knew basically nothing about me. That’s when I suspected he’d been using AI.”

Rachel gave her date the benefit of the doubt. “I thought maybe he was nervous,” she says. But she’d been “Chatfished” before, so when the gap between his real and digital selves failed to close on their second date, she called it off. “I’d already been ChatGPT-ed into bed at least once. I didn’t want it to happen again.”

Had lunch with a new friend today who doesn't like trump, but does like rfkjr because she likes "natural healing". Had to eventually just mentally agree to disagree or the bike ride back was gonna be awkward.

Is there a detachable keyboard? Text to speech? Did it on the computer and texted it to himself on the PADD?

Goooood night 🖤
Davey Havok, singer of AFI on stage on a black coast and black pants and his new absurd hair situation (sideburns, floofy curls, fair handful of thin braids that go halfway down his back, although you can't see them in this photo, and a 'stache - the look has been described as '60s desert sex cult when paired with some more flowey clothes) Jacket's off now, pink tank top exposed - saw a link today, it's *$365!! Davey's now crowd-walking - fully supported by folk holding up his legs/feet Still in/on the crowd, singing

I've noticed the opposing team's fans only cheer when the opponents score on us. To win those fans over, I recommend we score on ourselves repeatedly; that will surely make them so happy they'll start supporting us. And I'm sure all our fans will keep cheering for us—who else is there to cheer for?

Capitalism in a nutshell:
Studies of UBI - positive effects, cheaper than government benefits, don't directly finance capital, so WE MUST STUDY MORE

Studies of LLMs - lots of harm, very expensive, directly finance major corporations & the wealthy, so we MUST IMPLEMENT BUT BETTER SOMEHOW

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

If anyone’s struggled to keep up with my threads on why the genAI bubble
Is a bubble, here’s a simplified pictorial explanation, the plug is OpenAI and the sockets are Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, Nvidia, and AMD
A power strip with the plug end plugged in to one of the sockets

@eddierobson.bsky.social Only time to read a tiny bit of your new one this morning, but going in one chapter from "I've had this exact grammar conversation with mom!" to "oh no this is a Never Let Me Go future!" is a lot! Very much looking forward to getting further into it! =)

Went to the Draft Animal Power Network's Field Days today!
A pair of draft horses harnessed to a logging arch prepare to pull a log out of the woods A maybe foot tall model of a draft horse has all sorts of stuff around it, demonstrating how you would prepare a horse to be lifted in an emergency A team of oxen pull an empty stone boat A vet is elbow deep in the mouth of a horse who has had some sedation and his mouth is held open by a black aluminum device while his tongue sticks out

I'm watching coverage of the gov shutdown. Absent is the recent Supreme Court action allowing the president to rescind budgeted funds. They destroyed the negotiation necessary for this process. How can there be compromise when one side has established that they won't abide by agreements they make?

My parents recently visited and started to do this.

My dad is a retired minister. I asked him plainly.

"How many people have you buried from car accidents, how many from crime? "

He never brought up the big scary city again

the amount of raw, unadulterated fear that many Americans have of even small cities is never going to stop being darkly hilarious to me
