sure am glad I have to feed every single assignment prompt into AI and then "humanize" just to demonstrate to students I know where they are getting this creepily perfect and lifeless writing

@npr.org your own article says this is a shit headline. Grow a spine or at least some journalistic integrity. You're failing to meet the moment.
In which NPR article notes the 2024 Swedish study of 2M children that showed there was no link between autism and acetaminophen

America 2025. Please Don’t Offend The White Supremacists
4 panel comic

Panel 1: On the left hand side of the panel a member of the KKK is snivelling like a pissy little baby. A Red Guy and a Purple Guy stand next to him. The Red Guy says to the Purple Guy, “Look what you’ve done”

Panel 2: The Red Guy continues “You’ve upset this poor, sweet racist”
the little KKK bitch whimpers “I don’t even feel like lynching a black person”

Panel 3: The Red Guy goes on with disgusting sympathy “He doesn’t even feel like lynching a black person”

Panel 4: The Red Guy says “And that’s his FAVOURITE thing to do” he puts his arm around the whiny little pointy robed cunt.

"sorry, we gotta go right wing on the border, and not stand up for trans people, and also support israel to the hilt, or they might not vote for us"

huh! interesting. does this calculus on getting votes apply to us who want different?

"no. fuck you. you just support us forever without complaint."

Jon Lasser was a sweet and thoughtful guy who added much to the world. Memory eternal.

Mourning the loss of Jon Lasser, Seattle SFF community stalwart and new friend and colleague. The world has lost a deeply generous and compassionate human and talented author.

You'll be missed.

GOP lawmakers cite Georgia’s experiment as a model for the federal Medicaid work requirements set to take effect in 2027.

A new report by a government spending watchdog found that the nation’s only Medicaid work requirement program spent twice as much on administrative costs as on health care.

Ensign Mary Sue got reduced to a stereotype. 70s fan culture was quite misogynist. There were a lot of young women who looked for capable role models in Trek and saw... Kirk's girl-of-the-week. So they wrote the same girl but with superhuman competence. Almost like the men writing... Kirk.

an observation here that hearkens back to the origination of Mary Sue as "Ensign Mary Sue" in Trek fanfic: all fanfic can give people marginalized in the IP a space to develop their identity.

Troi, Crusher, Dax, Kira Nerys--statistically likely to be written by women who came up in 70s Trek fanfic.

(Psst: I would love to see some talk, maybe some article I don't have time to write, that covers the pre-Internet history of repackaging fanfic. I was always floored that Dennis McKiernan wrote such a transparently obvious sequel to LotR and got his Very Robust Eighties career out of it.)

a really worthwhile read! I am fascinated by this kind of stuff, being slightly too old to have come up on A03 and shipping culture, but still having done my share of "filing off the serial numbers."

deepest of deep breaths

feeling nervous about this one, friends! I've written about the mainstreaming of pull-to-publish, its impact on fandom, and what it means for an increasingly corporate and IP-driven creative landscape.

"Feed fanfic into capitalism, and it comes out shaped like capitalism."

@readingtheend.bsky.social dissects the trend pulling fanfiction through the traditional publishing pipeline (and what it means for fandom):

This is correct. Any candidate cynically “triangulating” on trans kids is a non-starter, and now is the time to say so. There’s still so much time to advance candidates that DON’T suck.

I will never, ever vote for Gavin Newsom. Ever, under any circumstances. I don't care if he becomes the Dem nominee, he's still not getting my vote.
julierei.bsky.social
On a recent podcast Gavin Newsom tells Shawn Ryan how the Trans sports issue opened the door for him to change his mind on GAC for Trans Youth.

As someone who adored him since 2004 and voted for him 5 times, I can't wait for him to leave office.

There is no way I will be voting for him a 6th time.
