It’s worse than most folks realize. Since last Sept, journos in Canada haven’t been able to post *any* links to their own work on FB, bc the gov passed a (sensible) law that Meta must share some of the profit it makes off those links, & Zuck threw a tantrum.

Corporate greed, strangling journalism.
If you’re a writer, it is just ridiculous to deal with any platform engaging in link throttling.

This sucks for many reasons. One is that Rachel is an absolutely essential voice that deserves to be paid for her work so we can get more of it.

Second is that this is another example of how repression of those monitoring hate and extremism has led to far less coverage, endangering us all.

Today's essential read for all Canadians.
Without tougher scrutiny by the news media and fiercer rebuttals by political opponents, Poilievre has no reason to change tactics. But with a federal election looming, it’s essential to put his blanket assertions finally to the test.

No social media platform has prioritized journalism for years. I hope they continue to not suppress links because that’s one of the biggest assets Bluesky has. That’s more meaningful long term than any other feature.
Also, holy shit, Bluesky sends real traffic. Will update this tomorrow with firm numbers but journalism is going to move here for sure. Twitter is a drop in the bucket. It's over, but we are so back, and so on and so forth

It's trans day of remembrance where we remember all of our siblings we've lost this year to violence and hate. We know we've lost at least 350 trans and nonbinary people have been murdered in the last year.

We honor the dead and fight like hell for the living.

I generally think the thing that has plagued this government is not bad ideas, or misplaced priorities, misidentification of problems or a lack of responses but a relative inattention to the very real value of speed.

Ultimately, the echo chamber commentary is meant to inoculate the population with increasingly far right and openly fascist rhetoric while also pushing that any other speech is not as important and is based on not understanding the fascists argument. It’s an astroturf. We don’t accept fascism.
