I think you are right. We see it in even the short term where people in Florida stop preparing for hurricanes when too much time elapses since the last major hit. Memories are short and critical thinking absent.

Fellow academics, if your work is on academia dot edu, the website now automatically creates "AI podcasts" and "AI reviews" of your papers. This is OPT-OUT, not opt-in.

They don't ask you for permission, but YOU can turn off this feature through the settings!
Yeah, I've gotten this, as have a couple friends of mine. If you don't want academia dot edu doing this nonsense, you can go to account settings, and then "AI settings" and turn off the AI-enhanced outputs.

I feel this a lot these days when I see people angry that other folks are not focused on the same atrocity they are, with the same intensity they are. I regret to say there's more than one genuine atrocity in the world at the moment; it doesn't minimize the others if one chooses another to focus on.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

I went into my library's database of Chicago area newspapers to confirm this isn't fake, and it's not.

@chicago.suntimes.com Why the hell are you using ChatGPT to make up book titles? You used to have a books staff. Absolutely no fact checking?

“There is value in continued presence, in bearing witness, in working for reform from within. But there comes a point when presence itself becomes an endorsement, when working within the system becomes indistinguishable from working for it. “

Sometimes I get super interested in an activity, read everything I can, purchase lots of supplies, and then move on to the next one. I hope you actually make something!

The National Science Foundation has been ordered to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice”.

No new grants can be awarded. No current grants can be funded.

If they don’t reverse course, this “is going to destroy people's labs” according to Dr. Colin Carlson.

My child just accepted Harvard’s admission offer and I’m not feeling quite as reluctant to write that tuition check now! 💪
My Colombian aunt felt right at home in Boston and just blared the horn as she went through traffic lights.

I however was white knuckled just going a few blocks to the grocery store.
