Fellow academics, if your work is on academia dot edu, the website now automatically creates "AI podcasts" and "AI reviews" of your papers. This is OPT-OUT, not opt-in.

They don't ask you for permission, but YOU can turn off this feature through the settings!
Yeah, I've gotten this, as have a couple friends of mine. If you don't want academia dot edu doing this nonsense, you can go to account settings, and then "AI settings" and turn off the AI-enhanced outputs.

I feel this a lot these days when I see people angry that other folks are not focused on the same atrocity they are, with the same intensity they are. I regret to say there's more than one genuine atrocity in the world at the moment; it doesn't minimize the others if one chooses another to focus on.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

The National Science Foundation has been ordered to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice”.

No new grants can be awarded. No current grants can be funded.

If they don’t reverse course, this “is going to destroy people's labs” according to Dr. Colin Carlson.

Pretty simple rule of thumb when wondering why the Trump administration does anything is to ask two questions:

1) is it racist?

Or

2) are they stupid?

Tends to cover most Trump administration stuff.
