Whether or not you’re familiar with Kemi Badenoch, this is a magnificent view of Sir Pratchett’s work and why I’m so deeply fond of it.

At almost 2,000 years old, this child’s wooden toy sword is a remarkable survival from Roman times!

Found in the living quarters of the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda fort in 2017. Dated c.120 AD. Chesterholm Museum 📷 by me

My photo shows a Roman-era wooden toy sword made from oak. It is dark brown in colour, displayed against a cream and pale green background. It is carved to look like an adult sword, with a semi-circular handle, a blade with pointed tip, and a semi-circular guard embellished with a centrally-set oval polished stone. The wood is remarkably well-preserved except for a break across the hilt. Excavated in 2017 from the cavalry barracks at Vindolanda, a fort on the Roman Empire’s northern frontier. Dated c. AD 120.

Sean Connery is a red strapped outfit. He's very hairy. William Shatner as Captain Kirk. He's in a black strapped outfit and has a smooth chest.

“You gotta let it bounce,” Lin says, his voice urgent, fierce. “The two-bounce rule.”

“It don’t bounce,” I say. “I seen cow-flop with more bounce.”

But, in truth, it had not exactly been gold, or even the promise of gold, but more like the fantasy of gold, the fairy dream that the gold is there, at the end of the rainbow, and will continue to be there forever - provided, naturally, that you don't go and look. This is known as finance.

A lovely reminder to reread this, on the day my son goes to his first-ever Homecoming shindig and he and all his friends are dressed like vampires and they’re just fizzing with joy. 👇💚

Picture me gesticulating wildly at this post, because DRIVE is fantastic! And it’s very satisfying in the form of books you can hold while burrowing under a cozy blanket, too. And also books your kids will steal and enjoy in their rooms under cozy blankets before you’re even done reading them. And…

Bluesky pals! I have a sci-fi graphic novel called DRIVE, & it's my favorite thing I've ever done! If you need a long, escapist read at the moment the entire thing is free to read, here: drivecomic.com
( THIS PAGE: "How do we play this?" )
PANEL 1: THE CAPTAIN, a middle aged woman with curly white hair, stands with her hand to her chin, contemplating her next move. NOSH, a large alien with bumpy skin and huge eyes, clasps his hands to his chest.
CAPTAIN: So how do we play this? I HAVE to report to the Emperor, but I’d like to do it without getting killed.
NOSH: Is tough. Because Emperor’s personal guard is EXTRA VICIOUS MEEAN JERK GUYS.
PANEL 2: ORLA, a young woman with longer curly hair, in a darker uniform, motions with her arm.
ORLA: It’s worse than that. Word from my sources is he doesn’t trust his personal guard, right now. The footage from Du Fu and Industriaglobo shows him walking in with dozens of huge Tesskans.
PANEL 3: CUDDOW, a squishy ailien with 14 arms 6 eyes and a antennae on his head, motions as SKITTER, a small squirrel-like alien with a mohawk, sits in his floating chair.
CUDDOW: Ooof. And we all know the old Fillipod saying about huge Tesskans. “The bigger they are…
SKITTER: The harder they fall?
CUDDOW: …the cleaner their decapitation swings.”
PANEL 4: THE CAPTAIN directs her question to ORLA, who looks around her body.
CAPTAIN: I’ll need a weapon. A HIDDEN WEAPON. Orla, what’s your Jinyiwei loadout?
ORLA: I currently have… NINE…? Weapons secreted about my uniform.
PANEL 5: ORLA goes analytical, holding her hands up as a scan, raising an eyebrow. CUDDOW, next to her, gets an idea.
ORLA: But the Emperor will subject you to scans and pat-downs.
CUDDOW: NO. You’d need a weapon that no scan could discover. A weapon no one even bothers to look for. A naturally occurring weapon.
PANEL 6: Close up on CUDDOW, the light shining from below to create dramatic lighting. His eyes bulge even more than normal, his antennae droops as he is scared of his idea.
CUDDOW: Like the weapon on a very very very very very VERY brave fillipod. WHICH COULD BE TRUE IF HE JUST KEEPS SAYING IT

I’m struck anew by this - just realized I’ve always thought of the iron lung as such a potent symbol of suffering and despair. (Might be a generational thing.) But it was a compassionate, brilliant invention, and it saved so many lives. A symbol of hope. Many thanks to Dr. Fitzharris for the repost!

Hard-hitting polio advert from 1958. In the first half of the 20th century, polio was the leading cause of death in children and young adults. 1/7
An advertisement for the polio vaccine which reads: "they all got vaccine except dad...don't take a chance...take your polio shots!" It depicts a photo of a family gathered around a father who is in an iron lung.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.
