In late July, Paul Ingrassia, the White House liaison for the Department of Homeland Security, arrived at a Ritz-Carlton in Orlando with a lower-ranking female colleague and others from their department. When the group reached the front desk, the woman learned she didn’t have a hotel room.

Ingrassia then informed her that she would be staying with him, according to five administration officials familiar with the episode. Eventually the woman discovered that Ingrassia had arranged ahead of time to have her hotel room canceled so she would have to stay with him, three of those officials said.

When prices were going up under Biden there was a constant deluge of news stories about it because the media did not like Biden and wanted him to lose. Under Trump there is not a constant deluge of news stories about coffee prices because they like Trump and want him to win

Trying to get the average swing voter to blame the Dems for a shutdown is like trying to get them to blame the GOP for crime. Very very hard.

You know how, no matter how badly Republicans fuck up the economy or how much their policies contribute to social disorder, it always feels impossible to pin those things on them? Because "everybody knows" the GOP is tough on crime and good at the economy. Everybody knows!

Point is, we all know how much and how badly the Republicans fuck up, but that alone isn't going to stop them and it's certainly not going to make anyone give a shit about us. Dems can't just sit around and mutter "sounds like a bad idea to me..." everytime MAGA girds itself for slaughter.

Problem with the sentiment in the original tweet is that you aren't protecting the GOP from a "self-inflicted wound." You are making them trade a "self-inflicted wound" for an "us-inflicted wound," which is better in every way!

This is not a risk. We have seen over and over again that there is absolutely a major political benefit to publicly stopping the GOP from doing harm in a high profile showdown. If Dems win the standoff then it is imperative that it be yelled from the rooftops that they won the standoff

A little-known part of Jane Goodall’s legacy is that she helped place Roots + Shoots chapters inside jails in the U.S. and Italy. Some of the participants went on post-incarceration to careers in environmental protection. I met her in 2015 at the Boulder jail—still my all-time favorite assignment.
