Received my crits from @brianlarossa.com following his webinar. Promised myself I wouldn't look at them till I finished my quota of Christmas men. So excited to see his comments. Had crits on manuscripts & crits on Illustrations, but not pro feedback on full dummy. Worth it. Bk 2 #kidlit

You do not need to absorb all of the awful.
A gently rippled man made rectangular pool in a botanical garden. There are lots of leafy greens surrounding and occasional bright pink flowers. The clouds are reflected in a way reminiscent of an impressionist work of art.

In a dark nighttime hallway with huge arched windows, a girl and a werewolf (also a girl) are sneaking around. Both are wearing school uniforms, although the werewolf's has ripped a bit from her transformation. She has just knocked over a small table and broken a vase and the girl is shushing her. Through one of the large windows, we see more school buildings and a full moon. The book cover title is "Boarding School Werewolf" by Jo Barnett. At the top of the cover, it says "School can be a transformative experience."

Happy #kidlitartpostcard day! Before getting into illustration and design I was a cheesemaker. I never got tired of witnessing the magic of seeing liquid milk flocculate and coagulate into silk. While I miss having excellent cheese on hand, I'm so happy to have moved into visual art. #kidlit

However, the illustration, made in digital watercolor and collage, uses a photograph of a bright blue, sunny sky with fluffy white clouds in place of a stainless steel cheese vat and cheese curds. Marie-Laure appears to be leaning into the sky. Her t-shirt was created using a photograph of an old map of Europe, illustrated in blues, greens, and yellows, with Latin names of locations. The background of the illustration has a very reduced opacity for a watermark effect and uses photographs of the front and back of a postcard from Corsica, as well as a closeup of the postcard's stamp. In the middleground in two blues that match the sky of the cheese vat, we find the stylized name of the illustrator: a jumble of letters forming "Marie-Laure" as well as "ml.couet@gmail.com" on the vertical and a stacked "Picture Book Illustrator" right below the name.

Walking with grandkids, fun. But walking by myself in the early morning, truly inspiring. As the sun crested the horizon today, I recalled recent talks with others about difficulties in family dynamics, a PB idea spilled out like the orange and yellows across the sky. Wanted to run home. #kidlit

Yes we do. Sometimes it's too fluffy for a proper snowman. Then it gets a little warm, so we bolster them up. Then more fluffy snow, more melting. One year the cycle went on so long we just heaped the snow, stuck a couple sticks in and swore the snowmen had given up on winter too. #kidlit

#scbwiArtober2025 Busiest season 4 me, so combo: Murph coiled his FUZZY nightcap & put a CANDLE in his NIGHT LIGHT to investigate. Was a PHANTOM SQUASH the garden marauder? Shimmering but for his rotted BIRTHMARK . EYES stared. Murph was scared he might be the next thing to CARVE.
