Thank you to the first responders who subdued the suspect that shot two National Guard members earlier today. It’s an awful thing for a family to learn a loved one was shot while receiving mixed reports of their well being.

The Nuzzi thing is a good reminder that outside the deep structural issues of energy/subsistence, most of what's happening right now is an old-fashioned crisis of elite legitimacy, which sounds comforting until you realize how some of those have turned out in the past

3D PRINTERS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY. GOODNIGHT.

My fear when these deployments started was that somebody would get hurt.
Whether this was random street crime or targeted political violence, I think it was bad for the president to unnecessarily put the National Guard in harm’s way like this. They simply don’t need to be there.

God this is so depressing given the political response to it

Their entire economic strategy is (1) fire a bunch of government workers and (2) pray for an AI revolution that also gets a lot of people fired. And somehow it’s not working!
The subtext in JD Vance asking for "patience" on the economy: When leaders stop talking about current conditions and jump straight to rosy forecasts, they’re signaling the present isn’t defensible. That’s your cue to scrutinize the numbers, not just the narrative.

Curses, hornswoggled again!! If only the, ahem, United States Senate had some power to intervene here!

Tech CEOs love to compare AI to the invention of the atomic bomb. If that’s true, then government *should* hold the keys — not oddball billionaires fixated on whether this or that model will summon the antichrist.
No bailouts. The US should extort these companies when the crash happens so they get minimal compensation in return for nationalizing the entire panopticon industry and then destroying it once harvested for socially useful parts. It won’t happen but it should

I’m sorry to break this to everyone out there ranking movies but the best Star Wars is by far the 2003 video game Knights of the Old Republic

Privatize the profits, socialize the losses. Same old story.

Similarly the history of the 2008 financial crisis is a history of free market zealots going hat in hand to the SEC to beg them to prosecute their critics; the Fed for cheap money; and Congress to bail them out.
Dude who just got the SV Bank bailout two years ago is back banging the cup. It’s a tell.

When Obama won Republicans opted to drag out the recovery from an epochal financial crisis rather than give him a “win.” When Biden won they literally rioted.

thinking about how my parents escaped vietnam, where the CIA destabilized my family's home country by spreading misinformation, and they landed in the united states, which is now getting destabilized bc someone in vietnam is spreading misinformation
Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

And didn’t @patrickwyman.bsky.social say that Martin Luther was the ultimate poster? Interesting to think whether social media (long touted as a way for people to organize) actually *inhibits* revolutionary change by directing posters online instead of into the streets.

Similarly the early French Revolution is best understood as some extremely talented posters getting a bit carried away with themselves

the crimes are obviously worse but there's also the constant indignities of all formal levers of government communication being taken over by people with a schoolyard bully's vocabulary and the pugilistic instinct of a drunk at the second bar that's cut them off that night

One of the original theories behind crypto was that it would be a hedge against inflation and market volatility.

NVIDIA just posted its earnings. All the major crypto tokens are currently moving in lockstep with its stock price and each other.

Worth remembering that the Joe Rogans of the world don’t think they’re engaged in politics. That’s part of their success and something for political types to remember when engaging with them and their audiences.
