Revisiting this five years later. In the middle of the darkness of 2020, I had a chance to drive a massive sound system again. Didn't matter that there were no dancers in the room. I just remember how it made me feel like myself again, if only for a couple hours.

Revisiting this five years later. In the middle of the darkness of 2020, I had a chance to drive a massive sound system again. Didn't matter that there were no dancers in the room. I just remember how it made me feel like myself again, if only for a couple hours.

Just caught Digable Planets show celebrating the 30th anniversary of Blowout Comb and now I'm at a karaoke bar where a couple is singing D'Angelo and Lauryn "Nothing Even Matters" and it feels good to be old because our culture is amazing. Brown liquor is also involved.

When I used to do words for a living, I had fantastic editors who kept my voice intact, sanded down the rough edges, identified my blind spots and pushed me to tighten up my prose. Great editors are like audio mastering engineers to me.
Editors have a really hard job, and the good ones can make something unreadable readable, and the great ones can make something unreadable into something good. But they're basically invisible, until someone tries to write without one.

Just a quick PSA: word of mouth will forever and always be the best vessel for music discovery. Yes, algorithms can steer you towards music that aligns w/ the taste you've fed it over time, but a human literally saying "you should check this out" offers a superior layer of personalization.

I think about this and say it often. No other place this small has affected global culture this much.
It always fascinates me to think that a tiny island like Jamaica 🇯🇲 influenced the whole world musically: ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall...
