Dems do not have a majority and ICE has $75 billion outside of normal appropriations that it can spend even if DHS shuts down. Some of these asks would make actual, tangible difference (the warrant requirement being a huge one to correct an egregious illegality), but it wouldn't stop ICE in general.
Dems coalescing around 5 restrictions on ICE, I'm told:
DHS required to cooperate with state probes (big)
CBP stays at border
warrants for arrests
IDs, bodycams
ICE out of churches, schools

Dems do not have a majority and ICE has $75 billion outside of normal appropriations that it can spend even if DHS shuts down. To be clear, this is a victory, which was won by ordinary people putting their lives on the line in the streets of Minneapolis while almost all their elected leaders kept quiet or made only muted criticism.

For the second time this month, DHS agents killed a U.S. citizen participating in a nonviolent protest. Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse with the VA and federal overreach means another innocent life is gone. DHS, a department charged with protecting Americans, is terrorizing our communities.

Lifting this up again. A huge problem now is that there’s a giant slush fund for ICE & CBP separate from annual funding — that Trump can continue to use even during a shutdown.
Ds *must* make rescinding those pots of money the price of any future funding deals, as Rs did w/ IRS money from the IRA.

In 2022 we gave the IRS $80 bn. When Rs took the House they made rescinding that $$ the price of funding the govt. In each funding bill enacted since, large chunks of that were pared back

As a frequent NYT critic, I am going to say that you shouldn’t jump on them for *very* early reporting, because it requires a level of checking and rechecking that posting doesn’t. This is still a very fast turn.
Sometimes it takes a bit for national (or really, any) media to catch up with a story but now the New York Times is noting the video did not show Alex Pretti brandishing a gun as ICE has claimed. www.nytimes.com/live/2026/01...

Things worth really hammering to any family and acquaintances whose reflexive attitude is “but we gotta enforce the law”:
(1) Lots of the folks being targeted came here legally; the administration has retroactively declared them “illegal” despite having done nothing wrong

Venezuelan family seeking asylum -- entered legally, both parents with college degrees -- took their 7-year-old to the ER for a nosebleed and fever. ICE, which is now targeting hospitals as well as churches schools, blocked the child from getting care and detained them instead
The parents of a 7 year old, all of whom are in the process of applying for asylum, took their daughter to the ER when her nose wouldn't stop bleeding. ICE picked them up near the hospital and they are now in detention in Texas, presumably awaiting deportation. www.oregonlive.com/portland/202...
