I don’t fantasize about murder, so it turns me off. At the end of Justice League, Steppenwolf is already defeated, but then Supes, Bats, and Wonder Woman all take turns killing him in this ridiculous showboating Harlem Globetrotters style murder so Darkseid can watch. Not my thing.

It’s why I had such a problem with the Snyder approach. Always a situation where they “have to kill,” but the film has already shown how their powers could do it without killing. So you watch them choose to murder their opponents, and then watch them do the murder. And it’s meant to be awesome. 3/

A big chunk of their appeal is wish fulfillment. I love OG 1938 Superman bc I’d love to be able to go sort out wife beaters and arms dealers and crooked politicians, but I don’t want to kill them. So I don’t want these characters to kill while they’re embodying my wish for justice to be done. 2/

My own take is we’re talking about ppl with powers/abilities (even “non-powered” ones like Batman or the Punisher) that elevate them far above us, and choose to use those powers outside the law. If they are willing to kill, they become scary as hell and I have a hard time investing in them. 1/
