Ngāpuhi, Prof of Māori health, surprised terminal cancer survivor - 3 years so far. Toitū te Tiriti, equity etc etc. My memoir, Ngākaurua, is coming out in 2026 via Cuba Press - woohoo!
Writing to understand here & would love input. 🧵follows.
1. Antiracism as a noun needs to give space to lots of ppl & agendas. Thus, a paper theorising antiracism praxis needs to make room for Māori, Pākehā, Pasifika and Asian whānaunga, and others too, as activists AND as non-activist resisters

Got back from leave to 💯 vital computer updates so that took a day. Today the laptop has apparently stopped noticing that there are monitors attached 😭. This despite it notifying me if I unplug the connection. If it wasn't for a special issue deadline I'd declare it a long weekend. ARRGH

This 👇 "if Labour is enough for you then you're relatively privileged". Labour might repeal some of the damage, but they're not interested in healing it.

For everyone who hates what is happening in our institutions and organisations and wants to help 👇👇👇
Thank you @writagal.bsky.social for always lighting the way. We have had an uptick in donations today and they are so very welcome. I reckon after today, we all know what’s needed is a safe and secure alternative reporting option - and that’s what we’ve built @tika
If you’re heartsick and furious at the consistent headlines and the lack of accountability across the board for NZ’s stats, please amplify and support Tika - an org that’s gearing up to do something about it, including the excellent @alisonmau.bsky.social.

Tika reps are on RNZ just after 9 today.

Totally agree! "We protect the arts and humanities that create citizens, not just workers. We value research even when it’s inconvenient."

Trying to read a financial report and the budget variance page is doing my head in. Brackets = a negative amount, right? This one also has red downwards & green upwards arrows. But the green ones seem to show overspend, so my brain wants them to be red please 😂😵‍💫😱

Repeating this from a reply - why is Labour talking about a Medicard system? Everyone has a NHI number, some have community service cards ...I don't get the need for another system. I work in health and there are already too many systems -

I'm sure it's totally coincidental that the AoNZ government's changes to the Marsden Fund have been followed by successful applications led by female investigators dropping from 55% to 33%, and successful applications led by Māori investigators dropping from 13% to 5%. 🫠 🧪

Reactive hypoglycemia hit last night (rt gastric bypass). It's terrifying & I can't find any info abt what happens if I don't get up & eat! Do I just get over it? I'm usually very thirsty. It's a sign that my self-care is shit this week, not enough protein or fat, too many carbs, dehydrated. Ugh.

10 days until my holiday! I claimed a bit of life insurance so we're taking my younger 2 kids & their partners to Dunedin for their grandmother's 80th, with a few days in Wanaka revisiting holidays from 25 years ago. Every accom we've booked has a bath!! Plus meeting some pocket friends irl 😱😍

How the hell can I have spent the last 3 hours writing an author bio?? I'll tell you - imposter syndrome 😱😱. 135 words, 3 hours, stressing out, and comparing myself to every Māori author who ever wrote a word (many of whom are on this platform). I'm such a wimp.

"At its heart, tino rangatiratanga is not only political autonomy or institutional power — it is the restoration of wairua."
Kingi's piece nails the essence of why our leadership falters so often. Wairua-centred leaders rarely ascend within western systems. e-tangata.co.nz/reflections/...

This nurse practitioner here, who's constantly advocating for expanding the role of registered nurses in Primary Health Care, is gonna have a stroke if every political party including the Greens keeps talking about "free GP visits"
#nzpol

Mikey nails it - the feelgood factor of free visits is still feeding the underlying problem.
Free primary care visits (fuck this GP centric discussion) would be great IF our primary health care system wasn't an example of neoliberalism failing the people. Especially in a context where primary care clinics are rapidly being bought out by conglomerates of profiteers.
