This is the Western Alaska animal nonprofit working to rescue the pets in Kipnuk.

The residents of Kipnuk are under a mandatory evac order but can not bring their pets with them. Supporting this group will help with charter aircraft, etc.

One of my Wyoming field school classmates is camping at our place this week! She's at the "shovel bum" stage of her career, and got a short gig digging with a company down the street from us. I'm so glad to see her, makes the whole surreal experience feel like it really happened.

That's true for the 280 days of drizzle we get in the South Sound. That stuff is not really weather, it's just default mode.

That being said, you will also want a drysuit and cowl to deal with November.

Maybe they mean we don't get that many DAYS of heavy rain per year. Or "depends on what you call heavy."

We have names for different subtypes of atmospheric rivers. Pineapple Expresses, Chinooks, etc. There's a whole vocabulary and lore. Wouldn't have so many nouns if it was a rare phenomenon.

I'm old enough that my Italian kindergarten teacher doubtless remembered the reason Columbus Day was founded: as a pushback against the KKK's anti-Italian anti-Catholic violence in communities like ours.

Columbus was a monster, but he was probably the only Italian other Americans could name.
