Rewatching Stranger Things from the beginning and my extremely hot take is that it is extremely good teevee.

Yes, HID headlights are very bright but the bigger problem is the proliferation of gargantuan vehicles with 5’+ hood heights so that if you’re driving a normal sized car their headlights are at your eye level rather than seat level like they’re supposed to be.

I only went to see this because the weasels stole the title from the then-alive Warren Zevon. It turned out to be pretty good!

If you haven't heard the cover by The Hu, you should go listen. Mongolian Folk Metal and Maiden go together very very well.

Yes, and also, leave X if you have not already
If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

I think I must be a little younger than these guys (but, being born in 74, I still qualify as GenX?) and neither one of these takes really captures my experience. The real enemy in my teenage years (pre-grunge) was the overproduced, bombastic pop music MTV would just not stop playing.
As someone who is this guy's age I can tell you 100% that if you were into Pixies, Nirvana, 120 Minutes stuff, etc. but didn't like the Beatles you had to have worked hard to contort yourself into that special little box. Your enemy, if you absolutely needed one, was hair metal. GTFO here with this.

What fictional creature/villain traumatized you as a child?

This music video was the scariest thing I saw in my childhood, unless you count the house in POLTERGEIST or the second half of TEMPLE OF DOOM.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

Latest update from @britishlibrary.bsky.social says they are launching a new version of their main catalogue on Monday 8 December and around that time also launch an interim version of their Archives and Manuscripts Catalogue. Hooray!

Darkness, imprisoning me
All that I see, absolute horror
I cannot live, I cannot die
Trapped in myself, body my holding cell
Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech, taken my hearing
Taken my arms, taken my legs
Taken my soul, left me with life in Hell

Every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mic to tell me he'll die before he's sold
But I believe in this and it's been tested by research
He who fucks nuns will later join the church

I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚
