The only thing ive seen that scares them more than too many people is NO people. I've seen a few of the lesser shared car alarm videos. They get REAL weird about being surrounded by all that noise on an empty street. REALLY self conscious about betting watched from every direction.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

Earthshine isn't just apparent around dawn and dusk, although it's strongest at times of the month when the Moon is near the Sun in the sky (and the Moon is nearly a new Moon). So there's a grain of truth here.
If you mean why you see the whole moon even tho it's a crescent, that's Earthshine - light from the Sun bounces off Earth and lights up the "dark" parts of the moon. I think it's only around dawn and dusk that that happens.
