I'm a portuguese game designer, and I've worked on a bunch of them in the past 14 years; almost all different genres too.

The manual for Ecco: Defender of the Future will tell you that X controls the sonar. This is true, but it leaves out the button's most important function, which is to allow Ecco to scream his impotent rage at the world as he shoots out of a water tube in Hanging Waters and plummets towards his doom.
