Yes, it’s similar to the de facto impunity seen in other institutions, but it’s more de jure. Until the mid-90s Congress exempted itself from civil rights, labor and occupational safety laws. Their staff still don’t have whistleblower or nonretaliation protection. www.propublica.org/article/do-a...
Do As We Say, Congress Says, Then Does What It Wants

The things (mostly) male legislators get away with doing to staff… it’s not like HR can fire them. Lots of after-hours work outside the office, lots of alcohol, young staff working for some of the most powerful people in the country. It’s a recipe for abuse.

“A study, published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that last season’s 2024–2025 mRNA COVID vaccines reduced people’s risk of emergency department visits by 29%, their risk of hospitalizations by 39% & their risk of death by 64%”

Benefits were seen even if 0 risk factors

Annual COVID Vaccines Protect People against Severe Disease, Even with Prior Immunity

"The new research also “calls into question the idea that younger individuals and those without risk factors don’t need the vaccine,” Viswanathan says."
Annual COVID Vaccines Save Lives, New Study Shows
A new study shows that receiving an updated COVID vaccine reduced people’s risk of severe disease and death in all age groups, regardless of immunity from prior infection or vaccination

That’s the thing, though— none of us as consumers should have to be researching which brands of spices contain neurotoxins! We can and should use food safety monitoring and enforcement to keep lead out of the food supply.

I’d like to see someone track down the lead in cinnamon problem and apply the successful interventions Bangladesh did to reduce lead chromate in turmeric. doi.org/10.1016/j.en...

The GOP justices are highly intentional operators. Their approach of total solicitousness to Trump on procedural motions, while punting merits rulings for years, will allow them to time rulings to tie Democrats’ hands, if they see partisan winds shifting. www.offmessage.net/p/the-suprem...

Thanks for writing this! Disasters contributing to retirement insecurity is an angle on the climate crisis I hadn’t thought about before, and you also cover the question of how market-invested retirement accounts help fund carbon-intensive corporations.

The acting CDC director has finally signed off on the vaccine advisory panel's recommendations for the COVID vaccines.

While the CDC is trying to sell this as a win for antivaxxers, in reality this means that COVID vaccines will be more accessible than they have been in recent weeks.
CDC Immunization Schedule Adopts Individual-Based Decision-Making for COVID-19 and Standalone Vaccination for Chickenpox in Toddlers

ATLANTA—October 6, 2025— The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today updated its adult and child immunization schedules to apply individual-based decision-making to COVID-19 vaccination and recommend that toddlers receive protection from varicella (chickenpox) as a standalone immunization rather than in combination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination. The immunization schedules adopt recent recommendations by the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which were approved last week by Acting Director of the CDC and Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Jim O’Neill. The schedules will be updated on CDC.gov by October 7, 2025.

Those in person visits are a real pain point, so pulling the info from the EMR to avoid redundant visits would be great. WIC definitely specifies brands for formula— states contract for it. During formula shortages this was a serious problem.
tyrannosaurid.bsky.social
WIC only covers very specific brands and sizes of foods and formula, and it’s very heavy on dairy and light on foods appropriate to Hispanic and Asian American families. If you get to the checkout with the “wrong” item it’s embarrassing. It’s just harder to use than SNAP.
tyrannosaurid.bsky.social
When you talk to mothers who have used both SNAP and WIC, they describe WIC as designed to judge and humiliate them. You have to bring your baby in person to the welfare office to be weighed and blood tested, get “advice” that seems to assume you don’t know how to care for them.

I bet the landlord hired the “moving crew” and the guys to board up broken doors, but the units aren’t vacant just because residents were detained. If you haven’t been evicted it’s still your apartment. They can’t legally take your stuff. Fed may be civilly immune but the landlord sure isn’t.

My colleague Dani Blum spoke to OB-GYNs and maternal-fetal medicine specialists who are seeing widespread confusion and access issues among patients. Dr. Jeanne Sheffield of Johns Hopkins Medicine urges "persistence" — if one pharmacy turns you away, try another. But of course, not everyone can.

And did they get no-knock warrants? Under the 2021 DOJ policy, getting a no-knock requires (required?) a federal prosecutor and a supervisor to sign off before they go to the judge. It sure doesn’t sound like they knocked and announced before ramming all those doors in.

I can see how civil avenues are not promising here, but could the AG or the local prosecutor pursue some criminal investigations? Entering without a warrant and seizing people is assault, isn’t it? These aren’t the local cops who are buddies with the prosecutor.
