Oh God I just remembered it's going to be hunting season soon, which means I have to wear an orange vest when I go for a run on MY OWN PROPERTY in case drunk hunters trespass.

"Why pirate books if there are libraries?" Libraries are great but boy oh boy is the system still flawed. The library system, for instance, in my county sucks. I emailed them asking if they could obtain a book through ILL, and I shit you not, they told me to get a free trial of Kindle Unlimited.

God it will suck if the Trump assassination attempt was actually staged, because I will have to apologize to the most annoying conspiratorial nimrods on this site.

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

the thing about piracy is that if you replace it with "buying secondhand" or "borrowing a friends copy" it cuts through a lot of chaff. you dont see people arguing youre stealing from poor indentured writers when they buy secondhand & you dont see people arguing that borrowing is leftist praxis yfm

The thing that drives me nuts about piracy discourses is that it is not one thing! Some people pirate because they have no money; some people pirate because they're assholes and don't care; some people pirate because the book they want to read has a wait period of three months on Libby.

Oh but people do though. Lots of people. Plenty of people laugh at getting one up on the system. Others just torrent everything because they can.

Being stridently anti-piracy in 2025 is a weirdass position, but there are genuine assholes who pirate things they could pay for.
if you internalize codes of conduct that apply only to the working class you're on a dismal road. no one pirates a movie or book or game or album they love and pats their empty wallet thinking "ha ha! these suckers will never get my $20." they think "I can only support this through word of mouth."

This is a lot, but (allegedly) Olivia Nuzzi sent a secret recorder with a sketch artist to tape Trump at Mar-a-Lago so she could feed campaign intel to RFK, where [pauses to take a breath] something Trump said about his assassination attempt “would shatter our understanding of recent history”??

Whenever the piracy debate rears it's ugly head I'm struck by how upper-class publishers have convinced middle-class writers that lower-class pirates are the real reason they don't have health insurance.

precisely my thought. the president and his dumbass republican allies put these men and women into harm’s way for a political stunt and look what has happened
Whether this was random street crime or targeted political violence, I think it was bad for the president to unnecessarily put the National Guard in harm’s way like this. They simply don’t need to be there.

I support the war on drugs but only when it’s against this one specific person.

I've said it before, but the big question of social media is how much of it is manufactured. I suspect much more than we ever realized.
