Somebody on Twitter years ago floated the idea of an anthology filled with stories featuring the Maltese Falcon as it passed through the hands of various people throughout its history.

It’s such a great idea, but I can’t swipe it…& I CAN’T REMEMBER WHOSE IDEA IT WAS!

Damn my ethics.
The Maltese Falcon entering public domain in 2026 means that in 2030 it'll be The Thin Man's turn...

pardon me, I need to put something on my calendar right quick--
On January 1, 2026, works published in 1930 will enter the public domain in the US.

Some examples from that post:

Books:

* _As I Lay Dying_, by William Faulkner.

* _The Maltese Falcon_ (full book version), by Dashiell Hammett.

ANYWAY happy Friday! Today is a good day to get THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST and read it safely indoors! :D (Or wrap it up and give it to some unsuspecting person, I don't know your life.)

A finalist for the Nebula, Hugo, Aurora, Locus, Ignyte, and World Fantasy Award! 🦊🦄🍎

i really forgot how fun it was to just sit down and make art for myself :')

Two books for spooky season:
COFFIN MOON, Keith Rosson: Best modern vampire story ever (although it's set in the 70s).
THE TWISTED ONES, by T. Kingfisher: It lures you in with chatty good humor (especially about NPR Pledge Week) and a lovely dog...then slams the door and bites you in the dark.

My latest article for @forbes.com is about MOCHI....nope, not the rice cake. A new class of materials that could transform windows. MOCHI is as thermally insulating as walls but more optically transparent than glass 🤯 I interviewed the lead scientist to learn more 🧪⚛️👩‍🔬

Hmm, could very efficient localized extraction (read: highly focused points of greater outward heat flux) cause more violent mantle convection? Would those plumes implant big ferromagnetic chunks in the lithosphere? I clearly need to go read up on crustal fields for some more cool not not-whys

something i've been sitting with for a few months is that the reason we shouldn't see classic-style dyson spheres isn't because they'd be hard to see, or because no aliens, but because blocking the solar wind collapses the heliosphere and it would just get obliterated by interstellar media.

I have a weird question for the #bird people on here. Do you think someone could tell that a book was pooped on specifically by a sparrowhawk (or perhaps hawks generally) just from the feces? I'm looking at a 16th c. case where witnesses claim books were pooped on specifically by sparrowhawks!

While I understand this at a reasonable level, the elimination of tariff surcharges would either lower prices, or raise profits. I'm not seeing the downside of lowering prices in that case.
There has been one (1) period of sustained deflation (eg prices down for multiple years in a row) since the 1910s. That was the Great Depression. I understand why people (not Chris, he gets it) naively think prices should fall but I cannot emphasize enough how Bad that would be.

There was something of a tradition in MI6 post-war. If you did some super crazy shit in WW2 that was still classified but not THAT relevant now, then just find a friend or journalist who'll write it up as a thinly-veiled fiction story.

50s spy/war novels are a goldmine of real-world stuff.
Not that surprising once you think about it- who better to write great fiction than people who lived double lives for real? When authors were actual spies, the tension and detail hit different. #SpyHistory #Espionage #Writers #AuthorsOfTwitter #books #spythrillers
