This Hubble image shows massive stars in Gum 29, which are unleashing ultraviolet light and hurricane-force winds that etch away the enveloping gas cloud.

The result? Pillars, ridges, and filaments of gas and dust!

$Horizontal scene shows a range of orange, brown, and bright red dust mainly along the left side and top. The right edge is darkest, where there is the least dust. A thick pillar starts at left and ends near the middle. At the end of the pillar is a protrusion that looks a little like a pointing finger. The center has translucent layers of bright purple and white gas. The scene is speckled with stars. The largest stars, which appear at top left and throughout the middle, are blue and each have four bright diffraction spikes. Background stars are orange and red. The reddest stars appear most concentrated toward the right and are the smallest.$

The bluebird is a male, and we see the electric blue of his head, but the predominant part facing us is the coppery-orange and pale white front. He is standing amidst little pink-and-red tree blossoms, but I like to imagine these are instead the extracted organs of his enemies. So let's just pretend this bluebird stands vengefully astride a scattering of viscera -- gobbets of gore taken as a prize from his unnatural and invasive foes. I'm sorry I've really made this a gross photo. It's actually quite nice. Kind of a dreamy vibe to it, what with the wall of yellow forsythia blurring in the background, and here I am adding drippy bits and internal organs. I'm sorry. I'll do better next time. Probably. When I was a librarian our local gov threatened to cut our funding over a very stupid reason an the way we got out of that was just HOW many people showed up to town halls to shout about it. They just got exhausted of having to deal with people. That lesson holds today -- show up for your library!

WOW WOW WOW LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL NEW HUBBLE IMAGE OF NGC 346!!! 🌌

A star cluster within a nebula. The background is filled with thin, pale blue clouds. Parts are thicker and pinker in colour. The cluster is made up of bright blue stars that illuminate the nebula around them. Large arcs of dense dust curve around, before and behind the clustered stars, pressed together by the stars’ radiation. Behind the clouds of the nebula can be seen large numbers of orange stars.
