A very good piece by Josh Drummond about the enshittification of New Zealand and the need for inspiring, aspirational alternatives.

Time to end the enshittification of New Zealand
I live in the great green heartland of New Zealand; a biologically ruined grassy waste created to serve cows. And when out in this countryside – dead rivers rich with brown foam, man-made fountains of...

Meth use has nearly doubled in two years!!!
Drug consumption has rocketed over the past two years. Meth use has nearly doubled during that time. Support for people affected by drug abuse needs more support given this weight of consumption.

This is such bs from the government. While the rest of the world gets on with solar, wind and other forms of renewable distributed generation, we go further and further backwards. I hate it. We're the dumping ground for the world's sunset industries.

Just so we're all totally clear here. Everyone has to pay more because this government scrapped projects for electrification, ignored advice from the sector on transitioning off gas, and wants to build a terminal that is unlikely to be usable for $1 billion plus - money they said we didn't have.

If you are talking about increasing the cost of electricity, and not investing in distributed, resilient solar and battery capacity, nor electrification of transport in multi modes, you don’t understand the problem and should not be anywhere near power (pun absofuckinglutely intended)

We can have good things, I hope.
Important to remember that not all dire predictions necessarily come true - Lorde knows we have enough to worry about, so it's great to hear that maybe this one is not coming to fruition
I think that the data is increasingly not really compatible with COVID-19 conferring an increase in the long-term risk of conditions like heart disease and cancer.

This is, of course, a very good thing!
Drilling down into US life expectancy.

The two big reasons that life expectancy is higher in 2024 than 2023 (and 2019):

➡️Drug overdose deaths are lower
➡️Covid deaths are lower

It gets worse. While (a few) households save up the megabucks, Government does the same! The NZ Govt is not in debt according to any sensible measure. So, Govt and wealthy households stack up savings while our infra falls apart, kids go hungry, teeth go rotten, etc. Make it make sense. [2/n]

MSD have been delaying their December benefits data release due to data processing issues but they shared headline numbers yesterday. If the data is correct, this is a huuuge increase. We now have nearly 1 in 7 adults on a working age benefit. Link in ALT. (🧵 1/n)

What if polluters could demand a payout just for being told to stop polluting? That’s what the Government is planning in its rewrite of the RMA. New Zealanders should never have to pay companies to stop polluting drinking water, cutting down forests killing wildlife.
The Polluters Get Paid Plan: AKA Regulatory Relief / Regulatory Takings
How the Government is pushing an extreme idea that would block environmental protection and reshape our democracy.

What will they ask next, does the Bill of Rights Act give us too many rights?

One of the great British tragedies of recent decades is the collapse of its university system. Wrecked by disastrous Govt policy experimentation followed by neglect, and a totally incompetent, vindictive executive class. Utterly fucked now. Well done pricks.

Mystifying quote from the NZ Listener (yes I hear you, there's the problem right there, etc) but I do think it needs questioning. History will show Greens were nothing but consistent for 20 or 30 years in terms of well researched policies but commentariat narratives are stronger than the evidence.
