God knows I don’t have time to pitch or write anything—and this is my s h I I I I I I I t —but any of you with some time and know-how should pitch. Nighttime is rad.
#NightTideMag's December Monthly Macabre is PRE-CODE HORROR!
It challenged censorship, moral panic, & taboo desire. It also weaponized difference; often villainizing disabled, queer, & racialized bodies. It’s a DEEPLY complicated era worth reexamining.

Still Wakes the Deep was a bit of a disappointment for me, given how much I love Dear Esther & Rapture, and it was still one of the most interesting and memorable games I played this year. In fact I kinda want to replay it now
Still Wakes The Deep, the game that was the subject of my last video, is currently on sale for 75% off right now, and it's a damn good deal at that price. I had a lot of glowing things to say about it.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE STILL HAD HIS BABY HAIR

THAT’S NOT

BABY HAIR ISN’T LIKE THAT

SURELY HIS HEAD GOT BIGGER

SO IT WOULD BE

IT WOULD BE SO THIN
What I've often wondered is if Silver Age Superman had the Lex Luthor look down there, given that his hair didn't grow. All the hair he had was the hair he arrived with on Earth as a toddler.
OTOH, Red Kryptonite and time spent in red sun environments did cause hair growth, so maybe he grew some.

“I’ve always wondered—What *is* poetry?”

Well, friend, I’ve got a 16 week starter course for you
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Independent arts writing doesn't fund itself (trust us, we've tried), so if SOLRAD has ever introduced you to a new creator or changed how you think about a book, consider throwing a few bucks our way. Contributions of any amount help us continue doing what we love.

IDK, how many seasons did it take them to find out what happened to Mulder’s sister?
I only ever watched the first season of STRANGER THINGS and didn't care for it, but whenever I see stuff from it now I'm like "They're STILL doing The Upside-Down? They have no other stories?" X-FILES coulda knocked that whole series out in a two-parter sold on VHS at Suncoast in the mall for $29.99

And like, I’m happy to do that for them! I’m happy to give all of my students an A! Fuck it! But it’s not enough for these people, they also want everyone else to suffer, and they want to be *liked* for it!

Student will say the craziest shit in class and then be shocked when they get pushback
conservatives basically want to implement the caricature of affirmative action for conservative students. acceptance without meeting qualifications, good grades and degrees without having to do the work.

Look, there is no way to avoid TPUSA. You can give trolls a C-, B, B+. It won't matter. They can even get an A overall but if you give the feedback the very constructive OU instructor did, you're on the list. The assignment could be 2% of the grade (it might be in that class!). There is no defense.

It’s hardly the point but the umlaut on “reënters” is really giving autofellatio vibes here
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/

Constantly telling my students to take Medieval lit because Medieval lit is hilarious

People don’t expect it of me because I teach comics and comedy and creative writing, but I think you should all be reading everything. Especially medieval lit
Reading letters from the Princess Liselotte of Palantine, the German sister-in-law of Louis XIV, and it's wild because she had this super informal writing style that almost sounds like modern texts

Like at one point she goes "wish to god my son didn't love holding chunks of bread like a peasant"

Hey, it's Black Friday. Instead of fighting with suburban wine moms over cheap commercial junk with built-in obsolescence, buy a couple of books by trans authors from indie bookstores
On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo
Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

It’s true that poetry is generally the worst value, in terms of dollars-per-word

But if you’re gonna buy some poetry, why not send some money to a trans poet
The number of people saying that they want to read trans poetry but can't afford it is making me want to go to the bookstore tomorrow and do a bulk order of every major transfemme poetry collection of the year.

Maybe I can help get some of this work out to a bigger audience.
