How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

And when those new coercive powers are introduced, then what follows will prompt another round of more coercive powers for the state, and then another, and then another.

The UK is trapped in an illiberal spiral.
davidallengreen.bsky.social
The government want more coercive powers for the state against protests, and the main opposition party wants more coercive powers for the state against migrants.

Our political-media culture continues in a loop where the response to every perceived problem is yet more coercive powers for the state.

New findings on young Europeans:
🌡️ Awareness is high, but concern/willingness to act vary by gender, education & country.
🎓 Higher education=stronger activism.
💶 Willingness to pay has declined.
🌍 North/West more active than South/East.
🔬 Trust in science strong, but “tech fixes” aren't enough (3/)

The report looks at how Europeans (in particular young ones) engage with climate change and environmental sustainability within the EU’s Make it Green theme of the NextGenerationEU framework. (2/)

The study highlights the value of social media analysis for understanding public opinion at scale. With the right tools (and the right platform! #cough#), it is possible to capture dynamics of public discourse... (6/6)

wouterpoortinga.bsky.social
The bigger picture is that public opinion is dynamic and event-driven. Monitoring online sentiment could help planners + policymakers anticipate backlash, identify sticking points, and strengthen support. (5/)

wouterpoortinga.bsky.social
So the tweets were not about active travel in itself, but mostly about poor or unsafe design and lack of consultation/opaque processes (4/)

wouterpoortinga.bsky.social
What we found:

✅ Most tweets were positive
⚠️ Spike in negative reactions in summer 2020, after the Fund was announced (even then positive tweets outnumbered negative ones)
🚲 Debate clustered around design, road-user behaviour & decision-making.
🌍 Climate & health benefits were rarely mentioned (3/)

wouterpoortinga.bsky.social
We analysed 36,696 UK tweets about #CycleLanes and #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods (#LTNs) from Mar 2018–Jun 2022, using Sentiment Analysis and Structural Topic Modelling to see how opinion shifted before and after the Fund (2/)
wouterpoortinga.bsky.social
Do you remember Twitter/X before it went off the rails?
Not too long ago it was a useful digital town square for public debate. We used it to track public opinion when the UK Emergency Active Travel Fund was introduced in May 2020
