exactly. the q is how much restraint (which many people, I wanna believe, would say is morally good) can be strategically and electorally hurtful at the end of the day. tough times.

fgenovese.bsky.social
ok but the electoral benefits to moderation rely on the idea that there are many centrists/“independents” that would be mobilized by the wreck to vote for whatever opposition while asking that opposition to not retaliate. right?

alternatively independents shrink/dont vote and the left…backlashes?

fgenovese.bsky.social
remember that this mayhem is a direct consequence of Macron’s post-EP elections gamble, which might well be the French version of Cameron’s “chaos with Ed Miliband” moment

I do not know how you get out of this mess with party politics, even if the next election goes to the Ds. The tribal party lines are so deep and hurtful, the Ds will need a ton of self-discipline for not lashing back hard.

TRUMP: It'll be a lot. And it'll be Democrat-oriented.

Really not that hard. A missed opportunity for Labour

I am sure Trump would have said the same

The news headlines today should really not be “the left cave in to the right” but rather ”the right leaned on the far right to bully the left”

I got mixed feelings but IMO it’d be wrong to spin this as “the left should have pushed back harder”. It was always hard to be green, but we are in incredibly fragile times for an old, scared and tired Europe. This year will be an incredibly hard test for EU green policies:

LEAK: Car industry demands would cut EV sales in half & turn Europe’s car regulation into ‘Swiss cheese – full of holes’, according to T&E analysis of a leaked industry position paper.

This position will completely undermine the investment certainty needed for Europe to catch up in the EV race.

Obviously the tragedy is that S&D/Greens lost anyway. If u care about enviro regulations, you really cannot accept the status quo but also cant let a rogue EPP side w/ ECR, Patriots and ESN bc they would go *way further* than simply step back from sustainability reporting and corporate due diligence

This is honestly the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time- banning the use of the words burger & sausage on plant based products.

The world is burning & war ravaged, & this is what our Parliamentarians think they need to 'fix'?

P.S. Fish also don't have fingers, right @oisinc.bsky.social?

graphs from this paper on how what the Pope says matters not just rhetorically but also materially - and apparently the far right news have figured that out well:

Re 2) below, @lorenzocrippa.bsky.social and I have clear evidence of that:

In the immediate aftermath of the release of Francis‘ Laudato Si, Fox News made lots of noise bashing Francis for his “woke” green agenda.

Btw, this was also around the time of Trump’s candidacy to the 2016 primaries.

1) the Pope is following a tradition of concerned popes speaking out for human rights in ✝️ communities. Trump 2.0 is essentially a new crisis. bsky.app/profile/yusu...

2) expect the US far right establishment (Fox News etc) to mobilize against his message. They have systematically done it before.

Some thoughts on the strategic logic behind Kemi Badenoch’s announcement that she’d scrap the Climate Change Act (CCA).
It serves two functions:
1️⃣ It appeals to lukewarm pivotal voters in marginal seats sceptical of costly green measures.
2️⃣ It is designed to

Not here to defend the D-leadership but asking for some streaming of any negotiations is exactly what a party that wants to unveil corruption and bullyism would do.

This is what the Five Star Movement in Italy did back in 2013 and I am not saying this is my cup of tea but their voters were into it.
