🧵A political/media guide to the "truth" about net-zero

1) Add up costs to install & run a net-zero energy system
2) Pretend fossil-fuelled alternatives wld be free
3) Do say "eco zealots are bankrupting us"
4) Don't say "free cars if we scrap net-zero" cos it sounds ridiculous
5) That's it!

Climate is indeed the best manifestation of how enviro and inequality problems are tied together.

Not surprisingly, reconfiguring green parties rhetoric around climate change has been something that younger voters wanted.

At the end it‘s a way to ”modernize” the otherwise 1970s flare of greens.

indeed, in the past (“green”) decade, the most successful green parties figured they needed to normalize the green image by making it hand in hand with social policy issues. That tactic made them eat political ground on the left.

Best way to do it was, btw, through the climate change lenses. 2/

Some political scientists studying green preferences have said this for a while:

if the goal is to broaden the coalition of supporters, prioritizing social justice w/o losing focus on how inequality and environmental degradation are connected is more likely winning strategy than not doing it 1/
This is smart from Polanski in broadening the greens appeal. Often language around ‘green choices’ is received as choices for those who can afford to do so and just another financial/time burden at a time of already high burdens for everyone else looks tin eared. www.thetimes.com/article/a7ac...

I see this take around from time to time and totally disagree. ICE just murdered a woman standing up to them. No Kings is among the largest protests in history.

The complacency is coming from elites in media, business, universities, and the Democratic leadership

In the new era of “Climate Realism” driven by (US-induced, Europe’s endorsed) zero-sum shortsightedness and faux belief that climate change problems can be solved via adaptation(!), expect more of these announcements.

Instead of doubling down faster on renewables as the EU prescribes (not blocked but not properly financed by this govt) 🇮🇹 enviro&energy minister says that old non-functional coal plants *cannot* be dismantled given the “global geopolitical insecurity” of fossil fuels

to put American brutality in European perspective: yesterday i heard an Italian news podcast (not a crazy left news outlet! in Italy!) talking of American ICE as a pro-regime militia.

alright so at least <checks calendar> another 1032 days of this american news cycle
I know there's A Lot to be worried about right now but India is arresting climate activists on the grounds that they're opposed to fossil fuels

As always, we need more, not less, teaching of history around the world.

When people talk about the degradation of the (second half of) 20th century norms and the loss of moral values in the past decade, do they realize how hard those norms were fought for? They didn’t just appear from thin air. We didn’t just select them out of televised debates

I hear you. Do you know what stops them to envision a shift to fitting renewables? Trust in the government? Misinformation?

We can pretend that the far rights are genuine about any vision of energy/enviro politics, or we can simply acknowledge that the sound and sustainable electrification of everything is where we are headed, so we might as well double down on it. Turns out there‘s both supply and demand for jobs there.

Hi, we are Altmetric, and we track how research is communicated across the web.

We now have one full calendar year of Bluesky research data and thought we'd have a looksie.

NB: this shock that Trump manufactured and the opportunity he's seizing to be in the center of private goods he can then distribute is not v different from Brexit.

In neither case corporates were pressuring for it.

This doesnt mean they will not benefit from the chaos: bsky.app/profile/fgen...
1/Quick thoughts on Venezuela oil and what it means for world politics. Rather than a simple story of corporate oligarchy, more about Trump putting himself at the center of spoils that can be used to consolidate power i.e neo-royalism.
