I often think back to a Greek taxi driver who once told me: "Too many people want the harshest laws they can imagine - for everyone except themselves."

This thinking is rife on the right, but it is also prevalent in a significant minority on the left. And that last part always takes me by surprise.

Couldn’t agree more !!
It doesn't surprise me one bit. There is a holiness about some folks on the left who will go through timelines etc looking for evidence of ideological impurity. Some of it is fiendishly sexist as well - and don't start me on proseletising vegans. Nowt wrong with veganism but it isn't a religion.

Seems we’ve wasted years in finding Chancellors who can rip off HMRC and some who only last a matter of days. When all we needed to do was get the girl from accounts to sort it all out.

Bloody good job Rachel.

Water is another area where Labour are making actual improvements….

“This follows last month’s results showing that 93% of bathing sites meet standards for swimming - an encouraging improvement on last year.”
Whether or not you are one of those crazy people who go for a Boxing Day swim in the sea, you still benefit from the progress our Labour government have made to improve the quality of our water.

+ 93% of bathing sites now meet water quality requirements - a big increase on last year.

Boxing Day swimmers buoyed by year of action to clean up waters
2025 was landmark year of action on water, with biggest reforms in a decade.

Also we've fetishized "debate” in these spaces as some kind of civic good, when what matters is competence, trust, shared purpose. Medicine, engineering, boardrooms aren’t organized around debate or requirements of false balance. We've poisoned public discourse by insisting it be adversarial.

His opportunism is bad enough.

But never forget that this is the same Nigel Farage who allegedly made hissing noises and whispered "Hitler was right" to a Jewish contemporary at school.

Things he has NEVER apologised for.
