Was that not because of executive meddling, the gadfly of all good shows?
If you watch the DC Animated Universe from the beginning, the step down in quality once BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES heads into season 3 is noticeable and maddening. Maybe more so because it's from A+ to B+, paradoxically. A fly in the ointment hurts more than kicking someone when they're down.
