Conservative media criticism? We’ve got to do better, there must be some reason they don’t trust us

Liberal media criticism? Time to go on twitter and mock the libs so conservatives know I’m one of the cool ones

You can either leave, or you can start talking about what the platform has become and directly engage with the trash that's proliferating there. But simply pretending it isn't happening is making you a willing accomplice in the spread of cartoonishly evil far-right extremism.

JOURNALISTS AND POLITICIANS STILL ON TWITTER: You have pathetic engagement. You get tens of likes on major news stories. You exist for one reason only - to validate the site and enhance the profile of the tens of thousands of neo-Nazis to whom the site owner steers massive engagement.

This is just objectively the exact opposite of the truth. Every serious effort to actually quantify the ideological valence of political violence has found the reverse of what Vance claims.
Vance: “People on the left are much likelier to defend and celebrate political violence. This is not a both sides problem. If both sides have a problem, then one side has a much bigger and malignant problem and that is the truth.”

Counterpoint: if the values are inherently destructive, how you go about debating them is irrelevant.

There may be good reasons to let you say them freely, but I don’t have to respect you for doing that.

This isn’t some college debate club. This is real life, w adult consequences.
Ezra Klein and @theargumentmag.bsky.social people are in the same very lucrative business that Charlie Kirk was in: serving increasingly elaborate comforting narratives to people and groups in power. Status threat shapes everything in our political culture.

/9 ....I'm more inclined to say that giving the state the power to suppress speech leads to worse results and worse injustices, and less inclined to say that free debate inherently leads to better results and the truth. I'm negative-consequence rather than positive-consequence focused.

Another similarly depressing option is that Trump’s ineptitude won’t just cause an American crash, but a global one, which means it’s not clear where you’d want to move your money as a hedge, and investors are sitting pat out of paralysis. bsky.app/profile/nwei...
There may also be tallest pygmy syndrome at work here. It's not like other asset classes (including international ones) are going to be unaffected by the loss of US central bank independence! "How do I hedge against this" is a hard, hard question for an investor to answer right now.

Trump just says things that the audience likes. He never even thinks about the consequences of those things and when the moment of truth arrives he escapes it by saying more things. He’s never been meaningfully held accountable for anything he’s said so why would he think about it

Every statement by Trump exists only in the moment he says it and will almost immediately be replaced by another statement that he means equally as little. It’s why it’s so absurd watching news people trying to parse his claims in good faith
Remember when he said that Barack Obama faked the Epstein files? Like 48 hrs ago? It's already gone, like tears in rain

The worst are the folks who try to rationalize being a stingy piece of shit as some kind of principled egalitarian stand. “Well the employer ought to just pay them a living wage like in Europe.” Great buddy, you vote for that. Until then act like a decent person in the society you actually live in.
I think this is an important point. People who have always received tips are not to blame for random businesses accepting tips now, yet some people act like it's okay to not tip because they're frustrated with how often they're asked if they want to tip
It is frustrating that things are so expensive now and that tablets recommend tipping on services that maybe didn’t used to recommend tipping but that’s not the service worker’s fault. They work really fucking hard for low pay

My sense is that the 22 agencies that were combined into the new Department of Homeland Security in 2002 generally functioned better before the combination. Isn't it worth seriously considering whether it's time to do away with DHS and disperse its various functions back to DOJ, Treasury, etc?

i think that if you are an upper income writer living in a major urban area complaining about “the laptop class” — really, if you are a knowledge worker of any kind complaining about the “laptop class — you have an obligation to quit your job and go work in a factory for a year
Apparently Mamdani voters are the most privileged class in history AND are bitter about having no money and living in an apartment with 3 roommates into their 30s.

Pick a damn lane.
