It's always funny when Europeans lecture Americans on fascism and governance, as if they haven't spent the last 200 years electing a series of mini-hitlers and doing stuff like this constantly.

We don’t need to reform ICE.
We don’t need alternatives to ICE.
We don’t need to engage in dishonest debates wondering what the U.S. would do without ICE.

ICE isn’t even 23 years old. Most adults know a world without ICE. And the billions used to fund ICE can be used to meet people’s basic needs.

test the plausibility of this for yourself: ask "what sort of efforts would fully counteract the sociological effects of a system where people routinely sold their own children into labor camps?" and see how different your answer is from "years of open terrorism in defense of retrenching apartheid"
The south was a chattel slave empire until the 1860s and a de facto ethnic authoritarian state for the following century, which is well in living memory. I don't think we need to pretend that that hasn't left a distinctive cultural mark.

As others have pointed out, there have barely been any ECHR decisions blocking deportations In 45 years. Labour doesn’t want to leave the ECHR to ‘stop the boats’. They want to get rid of the UK’s commitments to human rights. Labour is putting in place Farage’s vision without the need for Farage.
There is no difference in practice between removing rights of individuals and leaving the ECHR. The end outcome is still the same, people lose rights. If human rights are an obstacle to your policy it is not the rights which are the issue, it is your policy. Labour going full Reform at this stage.

Academia has a problem in elevating terrible people into positions of power. "Sure, this person is a narcissist and sociopath, but they get things done! That's a bargain I'm willing to make."

It is indeed hard to get things done in academia, so I understand the temptation. But it often ends badly.

I attended a talk by a scientist at a Chinese University and realized that all the background climate data that she used came from the US (CO₂ Keeling Curve, global temperature time series, etc.). Although China funds a lot of research, the destruction of US science will affect science globally.

I find this pretty striking - we're not even offered the standard "here's why Mamdani's victory is actually trouble for the left" kind of gymnastics, the strategy really seems to be to hope no one notices
it is wild that Labour is doing exactly what the reactionary centrists recommend and is absolutely destroying its base of support as a result, and yet reactionary centrists in the US are just utterly silent about the complete failure of their program.

in spite of its sourcing this is actually sort of credible. openai's previously reported revenue was basically a leak in The Information, which does not appear to fact check half of its industry stories. releasing revenue by "leaking" it to The Information implies you are lying about revenue
In CY2024, OpenAI spent $3.767 billion on inference, $1.767 billion more than reported, and sent Microsoft $493.8m as part of its 20% revenue share. This implies revenues of at least $2.469 billion - though reports said OpenAI made $3.7 billion in 2024.
