Very sad news, John Gurdon has died.

A developmental biologist's developmental biologist, Nobel prize winner

His work is the foundation of much of today's dev & stem cell bio.

An inspiration to many, including me. Always asking questions & wanting the answers

If you’re applying to your dream lab for an internship/PhD/postdoc, always send a second email 1-2 weeks after the first one if you don’t hear back.

I promise we will be grateful rather than annoyed. My email inbox is a disaster and I’m quite junior - and very few of us have secretarial support

Today is a special day, some would call it the first of the rest of my life.
I look forward to doing the same as before, from a different vantage point, trying to use what I have learnt to keep on learning. Thank you to all who have taught me.

PARKIN labels damaged mitochondria for recycling
No PARKIN → no cleanup → neurodegeneration
Mutations in PARK2 are common in Parkinson’s disease

Accurate detection of PARKIN is crucial

Problem:
The most used antibodies are not selective
In contrast, some very specific antibodies are not used
Parkin antibody screening by immunoblot.
Lysates of SH-SY5Y (WT and PRKN KO) were prepared and 50 μg of protein were processed for immunoblot with the indicated Parkin antibodies. The Ponceau stained transfers of each blot are shown. Antibody dilution used: 702785 at 1/200; 711820 at 1/200; 39-0900 at 1/500; ab77924 at 1/200; ab15954 at 1/500; 14060-1-AP at 1/1000; MAB1438 at 1/250; MAB14381 at 1/500; GTX39745 at 1/1000; GTX65811 at 1/1000. Predicted band size: 52 kDa.

Which antibody should you choose then?

Julio just saved us all many days of research for the next grant application. I wish some Bluskey posts had DOIs. This would definitely be most cited.

Are 90% of cancer-related deaths due to metastasis? Apparently the overuse of this percentage in reviews has created confusion and questioning of whether this is true. The answer, which is as always cancer type dependent, may be in these references that also people claim they cannot find.

Asking BlueSky for help: For a review, I am trying to accurately credit the first paper that measured pairwise 3D distances between 2 pieces of DNA on the same chromosome (or cosmid). Is Trask 1989 the first?
I know of earlier single-locus papers (1982).
