Apropos of something deeply silly: there is nothing on this Earth more obnoxious than deliberately using a word in a way no other human being has ever done and then doing a smug little dance when people judge your words by their plain English meaning.

It really is unfair for Christianity to keep promising a day where God kidnaps all the worst people you know and then not delivering.

Philosophers really are the tech bros of the humanities. Once you decide your job is thinking about thinking, it becomes really easy to convince yourself you don't need to learn a single actual fact.

What it sounds like when philosophers who are also anti-trans activists submit an amicus brief to a US court where they argue for banning trans girls and women from women's sports.

the option of interpreting the Idaho and West Virginia
statutes as motivated by the justified aim of excluding
all males from female sports, it is quite invidious to
interpret them as instead motivated by the unjustified
aim of excluding males who identify as female in par-
ticular.
Consider a simple analogy. Imagine that we are
back in Medieval Europe. Gold is the currency of the
land. Consequently, many merchants prefer to accept
gold and only gold as payment. However, a new move-
ment is afoot, whose members are known as the alche-
mists. The alchemists purport to have found a way of
turning iron pyrite (fool’s gold) into gold. Some people
are convinced by the claims of the alchemists, though
many others are not. This difference in attitudes
starts to lead to time-wasting interactions in which an
alchemist or fellow traveler tries to purchase a good
using iron pyrite from a merchant who, unmoved by
well-publicized insistence on the part of the alche-
mists that only irrational prejudice could lie behind
lingering doubts about the possibility of converting
iron pyrite into gold, continues to insist on only ac-
cepting gold as payment. One such merchant, whose
unofficial working policy has hitherto been to accept
only gold as payment, decides to make his policy offi-
cial by putting up a sign on his store saying, “Only
gold accepted (no iron pyrite!).”

The idea social media wrecked dialogue is ahistorical. There was no innocent time when people held more nuanced views. There was just a time when you didn’t have to hear from the people your conservative buddies were hurting. Show me this supposed golden age of conservatism. Give me actual dates.

I also fucking hate that it is being framed as a Porn Ban when it effectively banning trans people from digital existence is so much more monstrous. They're both terrible, to be clear, but one is THE ERASURE OF AN ENTIRE MARGINALIZED POPULATION FROM THE INTERNET and it's being treated as a side

This would make it illegal for any site that has trans content--not just porn, but everything from trans people posting selfies to essays to comics and stories featuring trans characters--illegal in the state.

You've seen how fast the Age Restriction shit spread.

Don't pretend this isn't possible

Because Kirk's defenders have an infinite capacity to play games like this. Giving him a pass on describing the brutal killing of gay people as "God's perfect law" to focus on something else won't make them admit fault, they'll just take the win and effortlessly pivot to obfuscating the new topic
alicesouthey.com
The unspoken argument behind "he was taken out of context re: killing gay people," is ultimately not that he *didn't* endorse killing gay people, but that Christians have an absolute right to call the brutal killing of gay people perfectly, divinely just without even the mildest social consequences.
evanurquhart.bsky.social
This is extremely bad faith. Kirk quoted Leviticus saying gay men should be stoned to death, then called it "God's perfect law."

Pretending honest summarirs of these remarks such as "Charlie Kirk believed gays should be stoned to death" were false is itself dishonest and false.
sallyjenx.bsky.social
Snippets that omit context aren't actual quotes. Kirk never said gays should be stoned, he never said he didn't want to fly with a black pilot. Yet these are viral. There is a TON of objectionable stuff he actually SAID to damn him for, without my profession sullying itself with sloppiness.

I usually consider myself pretty desensitized to transphobia, but that Matt Walsh post he quotes genuinely makes me feel nauseous.

Elon, fresh off attempting to incite race riots in England is now trying to incite pogroms against trans people.
A screenshot of a tweet from Elon Musk (@elonmusk) with the caption “This is a massive problem.” It is a quote tweet of Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog), who wrote: “Anyone who’s been in the trenches fighting these trans militants knows that they are inherently violent. On a level far beyond any other political or ideological faction. Deranged, deeply hateful, angry at themselves and the world. Suicidal. The threat they pose is very serious. …” A screenshot of a tweet from Elon Musk (@elonmusk) with the caption “Seems likely.” It is a quote tweet of Aesthetica (@Anc_Aesthetics), who wrote: “I am now 100% confident that Charlie’s assassination was carried out by a radical left wing transgender terror cell. Let’s get into the evidence…” Beneath that, a tweet from Brooke Singman (@BrookeSingman) is shown, saying: “EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson lived with his transgender partner, sources tell me. The individual, who is a male transitioning to a female, is fully cooperating with the FBI. Sources tell me the FBI had texts and other communications between Robinson and the individual that helped FBI authorities solidify that Robinson was indeed the shooter.” A screenshot of a tweet from Elon Musk (@elonmusk) with the caption “Terrorist cell.” It is a quote tweet of End Wokeness (@EndWokeness), who wrote: “Multiple trans people in the area posted on September 9th that ‘something big will be happening to Charlie Kirk tomorrow.’” The tweet includes a short video clip featuring a man in a dark shirt turning to look back while standing among other people in what looks like an office or police station setting.
A screenshot of a tweet from Elon Musk (@elonmusk) with the caption “Disturbing.” It is a quote tweet of Andy Ngo (@MrAndyNgo), who wrote: “Unmasking ‘Luna’: How I found the evidence confirming that the Charlie Kirk assassin suspect’s alleged lover is trans, anti-Christian and on hormones. Suspect Tyler Robinson allegedly killed Charlie while he was answering a question about trans shooters.”

What I'm taking from the last few days is that a lot of journalists are like babies. They don't know words, but pick up on tone. So "Aww, does God's perfect law say to stone gay people to death? Yes it does, yes it does, my little baby journalist" sounds totally civil to them and they coo and clap.
sallyjenx.bsky.social
One of the reasons I'm not familiar with his views is that I find they've been inaccurately or incompletely reported. When I do listen to him in full, he speaks with civility, and his full context has usually been lost. This disappoints me in my profession. That is what I'm saying.
ziajd.bsky.social
You admitted you're not familiar with his views but are saying he argued with civility. Which one is it, Sally?

Cuz it sounds to me like you're defending him, and that's pretty disgusting and embarrassing.

The replies to this are really something. The one truly unifying feature of American culture across the political spectrum is toxic, brain pickling gun fetishism.
assignedmedia.org
Gun rights are the big trans news right now, but just because you have the right to own a gun, doesn't mean you ought to.

Everyone gets to decide for themselves about gun ownership writes Veronica Esposito, but statistics show you're more likely to use it to hurt yourself than for protection.
The Dangers of Gun Ownership — Assigned
In these scary times, it can be tempting to find a way to arm oneself, but its important to keep proper perspective of the real risks involved.
